Owner description: Are you the type of person who loves an adventure? thrives on relaxing and taking in breath-taking scenery? Do you want the best experiences with shared laughs and perhaps even a touch of Kiwi Culture? Then we believe you will LOVE the Barbary on Lake Taupo.Whether you’re after a romantic cruise, family adventure, a chilled-out day on the lake or a mates’ night out – the beautifully restored 1920s yacht Barbary, has it covered. The Barbary crew has outfitted New Zealand's only commercially operated electric yacht with luxury bean bags for cosy seating, licensed bar or B.Y.O, surround sound entertainment system and warm ponchos for those adventure-filled days when the wind is up. Marvel at the Maori Rock Carvings as you lounge on deck or take a dip in the lake and swim right up close to this must-see attraction! Located on a stone cliff face over the crystalline waters of Mine Bay, the carvings are only accessible by boat. Resembling the remains of ancient Maori civilization, they were created in the late 70s by a group of artists led by artist John Randall and reach a height of over 10 metres! Back on board, you can give your friendly Captain a hand hoisting the sails or take a turn on the wheel and there are plenty of amazing photo opportunities.Barbary also provides BBQ and Movie Cruises and is available for Private charter.A sail cruise with Barbary can be whatever you want it to be. The one thing everyone on board has in common is that they’re all having the time of their lives.

“A really nice sailing trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

We absolutely wanted to see the carvings at Lake Taupo and decided to take the Barbary Sail as recommended from our hotel. It was definitely a great decision. The owner was very nice and the boat is just beautiful! We stopped at the carvings and had the chance to have a swim in the lake which was just awesome! I would recommend this tour to everyone staying at Lake Taupo!

“Sail Barbary”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

The crew were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the day we went started out okay but as were neared the point we needed to go round the wind increased and it was not the greatest experience for me. I felt that it was almost to the point that we shouldn't have been there. Perhaps I'm not a great sailor. I can appreciate that on a lovely summer's day it could be great but I don't think I will be trying.

“Gorgeous boat, informative skipper, bit chilly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip put to see the carvings. This is definitely one of (if not THE) best looking boats you can take a trip on. The trip was great - it was freezing in May but we were provided with nice warm ponchos and a hot cuppa so it was all good. I'd love to come back and have the summer experience as well sometime.

“A little bit cool, so be prepared”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014

Following two ideal days with no wind, sunshine and 17 plus degree temperatures, we decide to head out the following morning on the Barbary on Lake Taupo.

The forecast appeared to be fine, however as things turned out, it wasn't entirely plain sailing. Putting this into perspective, leaving the shelter of the harbour and for the first 20 minutes, it was terrific with only the slightest chop. Rounding the point and things changed - but only with around a 1m swell. For me and most others on the boat it wasn't an issue at all, however wifey dearest freaked out before becoming quite seasick.

The temp was around 15 degrees C, however as advised by the pilot, it feels at least 5 degrees cooler on the water - and I have to say I simply had to end up donning one of the supplied ponchos. Being at the front of the boat too only added to the issue in that soime waves kindly splashed all over us.

But whatever you do, don't think this is a bad thing. More to the point it is all a part of sailing, what with the Barbary listing significantly to the point where the water was within a few centimetres of the deck. It was really great with all bar my wife loving it.

The pilot offered a wealth of information along with a few stories (when prompted) about her lengthy sailing career.

Bottom line: Do it!

“beautiful evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2014

I did this trip with kiwi experience, and it was a fantastic evening!! We had a special evening ride for those of us on the kiwi experience. We took a few beers & wine (not sure if you can always drink on-board best to check) and enjoyed the sunset over taupo. The Maori carvings were beautiful well worth a look. We also had a little bbq on board, nothing fancy but a really nice way to spend the evening! Certainly value for money! The skippers were awesome too!!
