“Best Backpackers in awhile!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

We stayed here on a recent get away trip from Wellington and absolutely loved it!! The staff was very friendly, always smiling, and gave great recommendations for activities and hot spots around town. Staying in a double room with en suite we found the room to be larger than expected and a great value for money. We really enjoyed the personal touches as well, the painted out door tables, laundry room, and kitchen almost felt as if staying at a mates place rather than a backpackers. Over all a great experience and must stay for anyone traveling through Taupo!!!

We stayed here for two nights in a 4 bed shared dorm. The place is great. The guy on reception (who's name I don't remember) was so friendly. We stored our bags until we could check in. When we came back he showed us around the hostel and our room. There were no bunks, just four single beds with a bathroom. The bathroom had interconnecting doors so was shared between 2 rooms. It was a great modern bathroom and was spotlessly clean. There was spare duvets in our room. Only thing which may bother some people is that there were no lockers. This was not a problem to us as the place has a great feel and often we didn't even remember to lock the room door. Kitchen area was large and really sociable. Overall a fantastic stay.

We had a really nice 2 day stay at the backbackers. It's like everyone in Taupo is super friendly and super helpful. We were advised the river walk and natural thermal pools, both were super experiences. The river is so blue its almost unreal. The natural thermal pools about an hour and a half walk away are really awesome too! we got our sky dive booked here as well.

The location is great as its a short walk to the bus stop, grocery store and many car rental places are nearby. We booked a double ensuite which was nice sized. The kitchen was well equipped and nice too. Highly recommended place of stay!!

I stayed here for one night in April 2013, and wished I would have stayed longer!

It doesn't even feel like a 'normal' backpackers, which is an awesome change. I stayed in a 4 bed female room, and got such a lovely and spacious room for it! It was definitely nice to not sleep in a bunk bed for a night, but a real and comfy bed!

The staff were nice and helpful concerning all questions, so thank you guys!

The kitchen was clean and big enough for all the people around. Toilets and showers are on the ground floor and look modern and clean.

Internet is not free, but reasonably priced and with the global gossip network (I think $4 per day)

Supermarkets are close by, while the city centre is a 5 minute walk away. This could maybe be considered a downside for people who want to be at a party central like Base, but I thought it was quite lovely to not be in a noisy part of town.

I can definitely recommend this hostel. Awesome value for money!

We got a beautiful room, ensuite, really more like a hotel than a backpackers, complete with fridge and kettle. The staff is super-friendly, both Martin and Beth were always there with a smile. The dining room/lounge is comfy. My only complaint is that the kitchen gets very very busy in the evening and it takes manuevering to cook and manage to find somewhere to sit and eat dinner.
Other than that, the location is fine, right next to the Pak n' Save and 2 minutes fro the town center. And for this price - I couldn't ask for more....

Room Tip: We had a good sleep in the ensuite room on the second floor

I had Christmas break for two weeks. I only planned three days in taupo. As a result, I spent 11days there, including new year. It's justified to be No,1 on BBH website in taupo. I just couldn't leave there, literally, I extended my staying every next morning. No bunk beds there. Beds are comfortable. Free coffee and cheap Internet provided. I met awesome people there and joined early bird tour to tongorio crossing, which was quite amazing.

They always keep everything clean and tidy.

I stayed at Blackcurrent for three nights during January, and had a great time! I stayed in a 4 bed share, which was clean and spacious. The kitchen was also big and clean, and so was the lounge (with a big tv and DVD player, with movies you can borrow at the reception), toilets and showers.
The best thing about the backpackers was the staff! They were so nice and eager to help, and gave plenty of advice, which all made our stay much better!
