“Underwhelmed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

Booked this on basis of description on web site. Was not expecting to be in part of an upmarket townhouse in a residential subdivision. Took two turns around the block to eventually find the place. Could not recognize it from the website photos and the sign is small. Still wasn't sure I was at the right place till the proprietor emerged to say hello, that we had been upgraded to a one bedroom unit, please put the keys in the drop box when we left the next morning and do not block the driveway.

Unit was ground floor and a bit dark through a combination of deep bulkheads above doors windows and over the outdoor deck and having shelter trees planted on the boundary very close to this part of the house. None of the views suggested by the marketing.

The unit was very spacious with separate bedroom with en suite and walk in dressing room. No cooking facilities. Just a fridge and tea and coffee making equipment in an alcove in the lounge. Very clean and fresh. Heat pump aircon in bedroom and lounge with the controllers working both units. Bedside lights not very good for reading. But this is something I find common in most places I stay. Lounge lighting very poor for reading. Good sleep. Good shower.

Walked around the corner the next morning and had a look at the ground floor unit next to the one we had stayed in. That had outlook towards the lake and sunshine on the patio.

Overall it was more than just acceptable but less than promoted. It felt like something built as an upmarket family home that has been adapted for short term accommodation on an interim basis until the interrupted original purpose can happen. It is not built or set up as a lodge or a motel or a hotel or a home stay. It was like overnighting in a display home.

Can't say about wi fi. Got rackets with access codes but couldn't get them to work

Location was 5 minutes by car along the main highway from the town centre. ok but not the most convenient location in comparison to other accomodation options in Taupo.

Room Tip: If it is going to be more than a one night stay suggest you pay the extra money and get a unit with...

We stayed here for 4 nights while on holiday in taupo. On arrival it wasn't what we had expected and no signs about how to check in, however a man quickly appeared to explain it all to us. We were upgraded from a queen room to a 1 bed room apartment which was very nice. The room was very clean, with plenty of room for two people. It is in a quite location which is still only have very short drive from the town centre. Tv was there with all the channels, the heating seemed to take a bit to start working and shut of at times which was a shame as at night it was still a bit cold. Plenty of fast free wifi as well which is always an added bonus. Would stay here again!

Was so impressed with the place untill, a friend stopped in to say hi on a trip up to auckland followed by a knock at the door telling them they had to leave, I was unaware of all these rules! Then to receive an email @ 1am in the morning saying I will be charged $150 extra!!! It's like none other place I've ever stayed before! It's so sad that people like him would try squeeze out every last doller, I would have loved to return if it wasn't for that!

We booked accomodation here over 4 weeks in advance. We travelled up from Wellington and turned up at around 7.00pm on a Saturday night hoping to get to see the All Blacks play Australia that night.
Arriving at the complex we were very confused as to where to check in or pick up a key. Only a very small sign above one of the buildings doors led us to knock to enquire as to where to check in.
No one answered upon knocking and it seemed that this was a private residence. After about a 5 minute wait, a very strange and odd man creeped out of the bushes next to the property who appeared to be the hotel owner. He then informed us that he had no notification of our booking and was completely full up for the night.
After confirming with the Bookit website, it was apparent that an email notification was sent to the owner which he completely disregarded and oftered no rectification of his cock-up!
We were forced to book alternative accomodation elsewhere at a much higher rate with no acknowledgement from the owner that he was in the wrong.
I strongly suggest that you DO NOT book with this accomodation provider as he seems to be either a scam artist intent on ripping people off or an incompetent and unprofessional business owner who is completely inept at organising a simple booking system!
Not only that but his demeanor and attitude to our predicament was appalling, offering no solution or compensation to the inconvenience he caused us.

I WILL NOT be booking to stay here again and I advise you also to consider booking elsewhere to avoided getting shafted by this con artist!

We booked three nights during the week. From the time we checked in to checkout we didn't see any other person. No owner or anything. It's was very strange. When we arrived there was no one to greet us or check us in, we tried calling the number on our booking, but no one answered the few times we tried. We found a key drop, which had one set of keys in, which had directions to what door it opened. We assumed that was our room.

It was a very nice room, but the experience leading up to it unnerved me. After staying there once, I don't think I would stay there again.
I think management could do a lot to make the guests feel welcome, but I get the impression that they don't really care.

Room Tip: Be prepared to go hunting for your room key and room!

So we tried to check in at our estimated arrival time only to find the place locked and a sign saying it would re-open 2.5 hours later after cleaning, fair enough.
Luckily on this account and also another not yet mentioned, that we actually LIVE in the same town and where staying here for our wedding anniversary.
So back at the new time and we where promptly met by the "man with the clipboard who cam from around the corner" like other guests have also stated, lol.
Very short meeting with him and he handed us the keys - abit rude however as he didn't even take off is reflective sunglasses to talk with us, and then bam he was gone!.
Overall very nice place - 2 storeys and quite clean--VERY spacious, but at the end of April it was cold and the heating didn't allow us to over-ride the timer - hence another visit to "home" and got a jacket to wear back at the hotel/apartment!.
YES there are wee signs of "dont's: listed around the place but they are small.
The rule about having no visitors or family to visit made us laugh as we had 9 or 10 couch's to lounge around on in the 2 levels and with most of the big French doors and windows with no curtains it was quite a cold atmosphere and not at all homely or welcoming.
So we didn't cook -- more notices about NOT cooking asian/spicy food - but we did sneak in Asian takeaways and we most definitely DID do our few dishes as we didn't want a fine!
NB: PLEASE read all the signs as there is a number of fines and charges you might get charged with that you almost feel abit threatened with.

This is the strangest place we have stayed of our extensive NZ tour. We booked through booking.com as it appeared to be a very reasonable price. then I read reviews and began to wonder if I had done the right thing. We needed just a place to rest our heads en route to whakatane so we went with it. We arrived at 7ish and by chance found 2 other guests going for dinner. They gave us the phone number of the manager to call. He came over and told us we had been upgraded as who ever arrives last gets the best room..and 'it is 10 times as good as what we had booked'. The area was an open plan kitchen / dining area. We were told that the gas wasn't connected so we couldn't cook anything. We had to call the manager twice to get the wifi code, he didn't answer but sent a text asking what we wanted before sending the code. There was a list of do's and don'ts by the door threatening to help themselves to money from our credit card for every 1/2 hour we were delayed in checking out! No guests allowed, no food to be cooked that was smelly!! And no heating on, no plug in the bath so not able to use. The air con/heating device had no batteries in it so we tried the batteries from the tv remote. No joy so we went out. There were threats on all heating thermostats not to heat over 22 degrees or it would shut down! The living area was vast, at least 10 sofas!! clearly this waste of space impresses many reviewers but overall this place gave me a nervous feel, lacked warmth in more ways than one and needs to be reviewed by a TA / booking.com 'secret shopper' for a realistic review. For a cheap stay to rest your head, it's ok...but just ok. For a nice experience of NZ go elsewhere.
