“Solid Choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2010

My family and I were driving through Taupo, and were so tired when we arrived that we just picked a place at random. The Prince Motor Lodge happened to be in the right place at the right time.

The manager escorted us to our room, and I was pleased. There was a separate bedroom for the kids, a wonderful bathroom with a tub for two, and internet was included in the price. He plugged in some heaters for us to make sure we stayed warm, and kept telling us if we needed anything to let him know.

Some of the previous reviews seem to have been unfair. The lady at the front desk was certainly no bubbly personality, but she wasn't rude. The rate was no great bargain, but it wasn't a ripoff either.

I would recommend this hotel to any families traveling through Taupo.

The unit was very spacious and fitted out beautifully. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The facilities were very convenient and the bed was very comfortable. Close to shops, hotel and eating places. I would return to this establishment and recommend anyone going to Taupo to stay there.

Contrary to a couple of previous reviews, I found my stay, six days, very comfortable,.

The motor lodge is very quiet and my room had a lovely big LCD screen tele, large bath, strong shower, and a comfy bed,

The room was cleaned and serviced with great intuition - when i left the bourbon bottle on the bench one night, the ice tray was filled that evening - little things like that. Oh yeah, there is a spa pool,

I recommend this motel highly.

I have stayed at the Prince Motor Lodge many times over the last couple of years and have never found this place to be anything but clean, comfortable and reasonably priced.
The hosts are always welcoming and I cant believe the comment regarding it being the dirtiest motel in NZ, This person must of been having a bad day.

The room I stayed in at $115.00 was the dirtiest room I have ever stayed in. If you walked on the carpet with your bare feet, you kind of stick to it. The whole room was full of old cob webs, and when I say old, I mean that they had been there for such a long time that they were thick with dust. The bathroom floor was dirty. The rubber seal on the fridge has mould growing on the food that had been messed on it. Can't really prove it but am sure the bedding hadn't been changed neither. It was digusting and will never stay there again.

PrinceSandM, Manager at Prince Motor Lodge, responded to this review, August 10, 2010
At Prince Motor Lodge we pride ourself on maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and this is carefully monitored on a daily basis, by an experienced team of cleaners and managment. We recall this guest quite clearly, who had already checked out of another motel prior to ours as 'it was not up to his standard'. After checking in to the room, using the bathroom and laying on the bed - this guest came and complained, again, that the room 'was not up to his standard'. I escourted him back to the room so he could point out his issues. The only issue was indeed a small cobweb in the corner of the room, which was immediately removed. The 'sticky' carpet, had actually just been laid 2 weeks prior, so the carpet was not only clean - but brand new! The sheets, freshly pressed from the drycleaners had been ruffled from him lying on the bed, certainly changed - having been the first thing which is done when cleaning a used room. Nevertheless, we offered the guest a full refund if he did not want to spend the night - but decided to stay in the room. We find it very upsetting that he then writes unfair comments, such as this on Trip Advisor.
We invite you to come and see for yourself that the Prince Motor Lodge is actually a very clean, tidy and comfortable place to stay. We look forward to having the opportunity to show you this first hand.

We stopped here at the end of a long driving day. All we really needed was a good bed and decent night's sleep. The outward appearance of the Prince is nice and the rooms are good, clean and pretty basic. The most impressive aspect of the room was the bath, which was modern and beautiful. That said, there were some problems. The lady at the front desk was curt to the point of being rude. OK, no problem, she rented us a room. The real problem was that we could not get the room warm by any means (it was a chilly Fall night in New Zealand). There was a sign in the room stating that the heat was in the floor and giving information as to how to turn it on. We turned it on, before we went to dinner, and when we returned , the room was still cold. We tried the tiny heater that we found in the room and it blew some hot air then inexplicably shut off, never to come on again despite our best efforts. When we asked for help, we were told that the heat should be working and to give it time. We turned in and spent a cold night under all the blankets we could find. There are plenty of motels in Taupo...try another one if you value comfort on a chilly night. At NZ $130 for the night, this place was really over priced especially since we were there after the "season".
