“Mount Taranaki (aka Mount Egmont)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

Mount Taranaki is the predominant view in Taranaki and can be accessed from 3 different places. The nearest road to New Plymouth takes you from Egmont Village up to the North Egmont Visitor centre. Another road goes up the mountain from just North of Stratford but the most popular side takes you up to the Dawson falls. The drive up the mountain through the forest should not be hurried to take advantage of the forest scenery. There is a circular walk around the mountain and while it can be beautiful with the quick weather changes it can be deadly and suitable clothing is essential. On one occasion I went up Mount Egmont with some of the family and walked around part if the circular track which in some cases involved climbing up & down ladders. We were to come back by heading down to Lake Dive and on the descent the weather changed from a brilliant fine day to torrential rain so be warned go prepared.

“Most spectacular views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

This was an utterly amazing place. We left at 5.30 in the morning after some advice from the DoC rangers there to leave as early as possible to get the best view and before it got too warm. And boy were we glad. We left in the dark and had the sunrise come up while we were climbing. It was one of the most beautiful moments. Take thousands of photos, lots of water and a bit of food.

“Good Scenic View”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

We travelled from Wellington a few years ago to New Plymouth but stopped at the foothill
of Mount Taranaki. It was a good mountain view with its mountain top covered by a cotton like clouds. Mount Taranaki is still an active but quiescent volcano. There was a souvenir shop at the base. You need to have a permit to hike up the mountain.

“Great days”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2014

Take at least two days. One to climp the mountain and one for the sorrunding forest. the forest it is beautiful and seems magical.
Cloves will be useful for climbing and going down to avoid scratches.
Make plan to have half a day at least for the descent. It is a tricky descent with a lot of loose rock and steep boulders and you have to go slowly.
Try to leave very early in the morning to be on the summit at noon at latest. If you arrive later the summit will be covered in clouds.
Bring plenty of water.

“The perfect volcano!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2014

We must have travelled for miles around, and towards, New Plymouth and Mt Taranike without seeing it because it was shrouded in thick rain clouds and mist (touch of the Welsh "On a clear day you can see Snowdon from here" syndrome!!). However, when we did see it, it was breathtakingly beautiful and appeared to float, serenely, above the landscape. It is indeed a dead ringer for Mt Fuji. Really glad we diverted to New Plymouth as I wouldn't have missed seeing it for anything.
