“Cute, quiet little restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

My husband and I were staying at The Regent and the hotel manager recommended Bistro 1284 to us. We made reservations and decided to walk since it wasn't too far from the hotel. It looks really cute and clean on the outside and seemed quite intimate on the inside. I think there were maybe 2 or 3 other couples dining but it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Our waitress turned out to be the same one we had at breakfast at the hotel restaurant so that was nice. She was very pleasant and easy to talk to, asking us about our trip and where we were from. etc. This restaurant has won awards for its lamb and beef dishes for the past 12 years so we had try them! I had never had lamb before so I had nothing to compare it to but I thought it was outstanding. I'm sure most lamb in NZ is better than here in the states but this was cooked perfectly! My husband had filet mignon, which was also cooked perfectly. We also shared dessert and had Valrhona chocolate parfait & mousse which was amazing, probably should have gotten 2! This was easily one of the best meals we had in NZ. Will definitely go back someday :)

“It was so good we dined here a second night!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

We were in Rotorua for a B and B conference and only had an opportunity to dine on our own twice. We found 1284 our first night and it was so good we made a reservation for our last night. The restaurant is not pretentious with a really friendly staff and beautiful food. This is definetly not a tourist hangout, but geared for upscale locals. There were lots of interesting dishes and we enjoyed Feta Pannacotta with cucumber sorbet and tomato foam - light, flavorfull and wonderfully delicious. Another appetizer was spiced squid with a peanut slaw and rouille sauce - Thai meets French with a bit of Italian.

For mains we tried the Horipito (native New Zealand pepper) seasoned lamb rack, with crisp sweet breads, ureniko potato mash (Maori purple potatoes) and piko piko which is a young fern - almost like asparagus spears and a Beef fillet with garlic, herb polenta, green pea puree, mushroom croquette and truffle foam.

There were a few lovely desserts and we shared a dark and white chocolate marquise with a raspberry sorbet and berry compote. Yum!.

“Lovely meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

From the outside, the place doesn't look much and on the inside it's a bit of this and a bit of that.
The food and service however were spot on.
The duck pate for entree was fresh and supplied with plenty of thinly sliced french bread.
The two mains we had were beautifully cooked and presented.
This is an award winning restaurant and lives up to its reputation.
Extensive wine list a good range of 'wine by the glass' options.

“Very Good French Influence”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

We dined here on recommendation from our hotel (Regent), and were not disappointed.
Very well spaced seating, fairly bland room.
Staff were attentive and friendly, though a little stressed when extra patrons arrived, but coped well.
Food was very good, well presented, excellent flavour balance.
Wine list was well thought out, with some excellent well priced selections.
More expensive than many other places in this town, but worth it for this quality.
Recommended.
