“Nice refurbishment but still an old motel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

We picked the Regent of Rotorua based on Trip Advisor reviews and were happy with the accommodation during our recent one night stay. The hotel is in a great position and is within walking distance to restaurants. The staff are fantastic and more than happy to recommend places to visit while in Rotorua. The hotel reception is nicely decorated and looks very luxurious.
The rooms are laid out in old school motel style but have been fully refurbished in a classy black and white theme. While the rooms are very nice it still feels like you are staying in an old roadside motel. The white lounge and shaggy rug in our room were looking quite tired due to stains and dirt build up. Maybe white is not such a good idea for hotel furnishings! The bathroom is nicely presented but becomes completely saturated after a couple of showers even with the exhaust fan on and window open. It became apparent that the refurbishment was cosmetic only and some aspects (such as bathroom ventilation) may have been overlooked.
Overall the hotel is very nice and would recommend it for short stays in Rotorua.

Loved the deco of the one bedroom suite. The bathtub was big enough for 2, bed was comfy and it was an excellent location, near the Polynesian Spa and food. It's a pity I didn't have a drink at the cool looking bar. This is the perfect place to relax at the end of the day.

We arrived in Rotorua after dark, having had a look at a couple of other places first but settling on the Regent, since it was trendy and had good reviews. Reception matched the deal on Wotif, so do shop around for the best rate before coming. I asked to see a couple of room types, then making a choice. I don't like finding a good deal online, then being put in a crappy room that is not up to the same standard as the other rooms.

We were shown room 17 which is in the newer part of the motel (by the restaurant and reception), and an upstairs room in the older motel block next door. Room 17 had a bigger bed, so we took it, as it was getting late.

The decor is nicely done, just like in the pictures. The bed was very comfortable, soft and large, good linen; you will have a good sleep here if you don't like a hard bed. The heat pump warmed the room in no time. Big walk in shower (it was a disabled access shower), was nice to sit on the little padded ledge to shave my legs!

We didn't really spend enough time here to fully enjoy, we were just passing through Rotorua. This place would be good to stay for a special occasion.

Cons:

Wasn't 100% clean (hate finding pubic hairs on the bathroom floor) specially noticeable when the tiles are all white. I think housekeeping needs to take more care here. The shower curtain was a bit mouldy as well and there was some kind of whitish stain on the black carpet that looked like it hadn't been cleaned up properly.

I can't really speak for the older (revamped) motel units which are part of this property, only having had a quick look before settling on the room we were shown first, in the newer part of the motel. But the decor is somewhat similar, but it seemed more cramped in the older style motel units.

I don't know if this place is worth the price tag, especially if just passing through, and there are no views from any of the rooms (it is in the centre of town). Having stayed at the Hilton in Taupo the night before, which cost just a few dollars more. Yes, this place is trendy and different, but it is still a motel in small town Nz. It all depends what you are looking for.

Room Tip: Rooms in the newer part of motel are nicer (bigger bed, more spacious).

Nice room with everything you require when on a road trip. We had great breakfasts (granola to die for) and we enjoyed the in house spa
The Argententian waiter was special and his recemondation off an Indian was much appreciated
Really comfortable bed

Room Tip: Ask for a suite in the new block

Warm, friendly, welcoming staff at each turn. Had a one bedroom suite with separate sitting area. The sitting area was sizeable but this made the sleeping area quite small, allowing only a queen-sized bed with in a very snug configuration. With 3 separate areas - sleeping, sitting and bathroom - the entire suite was heated with one unit in the sitting area. Consequently, if you wanted the sleeping area or bathroom warm, one had to leave the sitting area hot. Good amenities and appointments, excellent dinner at the restaurant and above-average breakfast. There is a small room with a rower, an elliptical and a stationary bike - all quite rudimentary - with no space to even do push-ups.

We spent a very pleasant 4 night stay in Rotorua. The hotel is very unique and has great facilities. Our room was in the motel style block on the first floor. We were next to the road but it wasn't busy so no disturbance. The room itself had a large bedroom, lounge and sizable bathroom with bath and shower. the room was transformed to make it a triple by the addition of a bed in the corner of the lounge.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
The area is great with lots of things to do, must do's are the luge, Rotorua museum and the thermal parks and geysers.

Really enjoyed our stay. From the moment we set foot in the door we were greeted by friendly, highly polished staff and instantly made to feel at home. We dined in the restaurant and were not disappointed. Very comfy room with fabulous monsoon shower, separate bath tub and lots of bathroom goodies. Make sure you try the Baileys Colada! Wish we could have stayed longer
