Mar 10, 2009 | Trip type: Friends getaway

I stayed at Treks for 4 nights in February 2009 with a friend in a twin ensuite room. And wow. This place did NOT seem like a hostel. It was new, clean, modern, and offered many amenities! I would stay here again and again and I actually wish this hostel was the standard for all hostels!

ROOM: We stayed in an ensuite room which was located on the ground floor near the front office and kitchen. It has a sliding glass door. The room itself is very small (very European in size) with 2 twin beds pushed against the wall, 1 chair and 1 side table (both located at the foot of the beds). The bathroom was small, too, with a toilet, sink and large shower. My only complaint is the lighting in the bathroom is extremely dim and the shower head is horrible (felt like needles hitting your skin). Obviously no air conditioning but you can keep the door open or the windows cracked to let the night area come in. Even though it was very warm during the day in Rotorua, the night cool down significantly. The beds are made up of futon matresses on raised wooden platforms. I found it very comfortable. And the pillow was decent too. All linens and 1 towel per person provided.

KITCHEN, INTERNET ETC: The kitchen is amazing!! It has everything you'd need to cook a simple meal. A large frig and freezer, a couple stoves, plenty of utensils, pots, pans, soap. And a ton of seating. There's a small lounge with a TV and a decent computer lab with 6 computers. Internet time is sold through a vending machine (but there's a cheaper lab 1 block away). There's a small laundry room that houses 2 washers and 2 dryers. In the hall bathroom there's a hair dryer.

LOCATION: The location is perfect... it's located on a quiet street next to a park (has amazing sunset views). It's about a 5 minute walk to Fenton street and area restaurants. All tours can be booked through the front office and the tours will pick you up in front of Treks. After dark, the gate is located so you'll need your key card to gain entry to Treks.

OVERALL: This hostel is amazing and should set the standard for every other hostel. I would definitely come here again. A+

Been traveling around North Island the last 2 weeks, Treks in Rotorua was probably the best hostel I stayed at since. I slept SO comfortably. Beds were really solid. I like the structure of the hostel too--cute and they have a huge kitchen/common area in a separate building. Staff was great, place was clean, I really enjoyed it and highly recommend. Showers/toilets were clean. And they have hairdryers!!! huge plus. Only downside is no elevators, but most hostels don't have them. Close to center of town for food, shops, etc.

We spend a night in Treks during our roadtrip to New Zealand. Easy to find, in a very good position Treks Backpackers was the best we would expect. Friendly and helpful staff, clean though very very simple rooms and a very big and well equiped kitchen (which finally we didn't use) are the tops of the hostel. The only that i could say as a drawback is that the light in the room was so little that i couldn't read anything (either the map for the next day)

We’re a couple in our early thirties & stayed one night in Rotorua. All we wanted was a good nights sleep after a full day of activities and before did the same the next day. We loved TREKS. Yes, it was a hostel but one of the best hostels we’ve stayed in. It was clean, well maintained and quiet. The room and bathrooms were great. Please don’t expect 1000 sq ft rooms as this is a hostel and there are no presidential suites. Just small & adequate rooms. The staff were very friendly like all New Zealanders. Location was great and both Maori shows will pick-up from this location. We went to the Maitai Maori show and would definitely recommend it. If you’re on a budget or if all you need is a good bed for a good nights sleep then TREKS your answer. (Especially when you’ll be spending most of your time outdoors).

We booked a twin ensuite for one night. Easy to find, ample parking, initially helpful staff. So far so good. Room has patio door leading onto terrace but after closing it we became very aware of the smell from the drains- worse than the eau du sulphur! Otherwise clean and comfortable if a little lacking in atmosphere, with good communal spaces but staff not very helpful chasing up lost property reports for insurance - still waiting! Okay for a brief stopover but imagine there are better places to stay.
