“Worst place I stayed at in NZ”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

I booked the YHA looking at decent online reviews and as the higher rated places were sold out. The location is decently close to the bus stop if you are a budget traveller like me, but the room we got (ensuite for a couple next to the main entrance) was super tiny, the bathroom was musty smelling, and our's was the first window next to the main gate so everybody walking by could hear us. The room is so tight fit and there are no closets. The receptionist we met was also nit that great as we were asking for sight seeing tips and she wasn't particularly helpful especially when we were asking if one place is better than another. Her only job was to point at the pamphlet rack and say where to find the info.

Room Tip: If you are a backpacker, ask for a room which is well aired out..

I stayed for one night at this hostel. It is a quite big hostel with lot of rooms and a large kitchen. For me it was a good place (clean and enough facilities).

The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Only negative part is maybe it is a big hostel so it gets busy by all the people, but for me it was ok.

We came with high hopes because of the 5 star qualimark. The building looks lovely from the outside, new and shiny. The staff who greeted us, as well as the staff through out our visit, was friendly and helpful, and one even went out of his way to find us a night light (we were travelling with two little girls), and change our room to one without bunks. But it quickly went downhill from there. The room was very small, and contained 4 beds pushed close together, and nothing else. The bathrooms were rarely clean. The kitchen, though large, lacks basic necessities (pot covers, knives, teaspoons). The main area is in separate building than the sleeping quarters, and because it rained during our visit, every time we went for a meal or even just to sit, we had to run through the rain.
The YHAs we'd been to up till now have been wonderful, so this was especially disappointing.

Got a 4 bed share. The room is nice and clean. The location is not so great, really far from the centre.
One strange thing happened there, took a shower around midnight. All of the sudden, the lights went off then hair dryer was turned on. When I came out to turn the lights back on, no one was there. Really wondering what had happened.

Staff was friendly when we checked in late night, room was clean, but rooms are too small for the convenience, clean kitchen was a welcome surprise...has got ample parking for cars...all in all a satisfying deal...

Room Tip: a good find for backpackers who value the parking in nz...

We flew in from the south island to Rotorua and spent a night here before moving on. Location was pretty central in town and there was a lot of parking nearby.

The girl working the front desk-not sure if she was a manager or what but she was pretty unfriendly. We had two rooms that were (very unfortunately) both facing the main courtyard. In the middle of the night, there were people chatting right outside our windows for hours and then there was some loud argument that broke out where the front desk girl had to kick some visitors out that were not guests at the hotel. Yikes. Needless to say, we didn't sleep much that night.

I guess my biggest tip would be to bypass Rotorua and go straight to Taupo (app 1 hour drive) where it seemed a bit more thriving.

17th Jan left Paihia heading for Rotorua the drive took just over 7hrs we stayed at the YHA for 3 nights room over looking the kitchen and social area not much noise after 11pm room double en-suite not too small but not a lot of wardrobe or cupboard space. the staff were excellent able to book tours and their knowledge of the area was fantastic. I booked the canopy tour with them picked up from the hostel and taken too canopy tours office for a briefing and harness fitting before going into the forest six Zip wires two bridges 20 meters above the ground cost $129ppart goes towards conservation of the forest www.canopytours.co.nz my Wife and I both 60+ enjoy walking and did one side of the lake and bird sanctuary also the Thermal springs eating out is what we do on holiday and can recommend a restaurant called Solace and a few doors down The Brew and just for the Beer. 21st off too Napier
