“Solid choice in Rotorua”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

A pretty standard YHA experience - nice clean room and spacious communal area with clean kitchen. Decent value at $90 for a double en suite. Location is fine - two blocks from the main road through town which has a number of restaurants and pubs. Good, helpful service at the front desk. Free off-street parking. A good choice in Rotorua I think!

My friend and I stayed for four nights. Receptionists were friendly and helpful. We stayed in a private room, thought it was very small, accommodating nonetheless. Bed was uncomfortable as it was a thin mattress on top of a giant block of wood :/ Sorta sucked how there was no tv, but all in all, for the price we paid it wasn't that bad.

My partner and I stayed for 3 nights in room35 which is a double room with shared bathrooms.
The facilities are great, clean, organised and plentiful. The staff were very busy, but helpful. The shared bathroom was immaculate. I've never seen a more clean, well stocked hostel share bathroom before. The double room was small but all we needed. It could have done desperately with a fan. Even with the windws open it was very very stuffy. The walls are also very thin and on the second night we unfortunately had an epic snorer next door.
I deffinately recommend this hostel. Great stay, close to plenty of things and friendly atmosphere.

I stayed in a 4 bed dorm facing the carpark. The YHA is in a good location: near the i-Site, close to restaurants, 15-20 minutes from the supermarkets or city centre. It's also near Kuirau Park, which has geothermal features and hot pools you can soak your feet in for free. The staff are friendly, the kitchen is well-equipped and it's quite secure (gate closed at 7pm, requires room keycard to unlock). The dorm was clean, with bed-linen provided. It gets rather stuffy on warm nights though, even with the window open, unless you're willing to have the blinds up while you sleep. As has been mentioned, the YHA is not very quiet: the doors slam shut if you're not careful, and if other travellers have early starts you will hear their footsteps akin to an elephant stampede.

When I said I was staying a night at the Youth Hostel in Rotorua my friends and family said "aren't you too old to stay at the YHA?". Well even in my late 40's I wasn't the oldest there by a long shot. There were plenty of "mature" travellers staying the night I was there. The YHA is two streets from the main shopping/restaurant area and just a short work further to the lake front. The YHA itself was very clean and tidy and the staff very friendly and helpful. I booked into a double room with ensuite and it was perfectly suitable and saved me sharing the bathroom down the hall. The bed was a little firm for my liking but I couldn't fault anything else and the shower was great.

It was a very busy spot and being a light sleeper and with my room facing the main courtyard I decided to avoid any sleep issues by investing in earplugs - I had a great night's sleep so can't comment on the consideration or otherwise of other guests. Good value for money (as a member) but of course you can stay YHA Rotorua as a non member - you just don't get the 10% discount.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper ask to be in a room not facing the courtyard - or invest in some earplugs...

We stayed in the double ensuite room # 30, which was very small and sparsely furnished, just the bare minimum. The hostel is nice but very lightly constructed, so you can hear every word from your neighbours as well as the loudly slamming doors - thus you're night can be over at 6 a.m. The common areas are very pleasant with a comfortable lounge and a well equipped kitchen. There is lots of recycling, they even collect food scraps for a local pig :-). Another advantage is the free parking around the hostel.

Our visit did not start well when we were greeted by the most miserable & sour faced receptionist we’ve encountered in New Zealand. She was rude, offensive and generally horrible to everyone she served. We asked her why the rates were different to those published on their own website and she responded with “well go book in online then”, wonderful customer service skills, first class.

We booked a twin room with private bathroom. However, there certainly isn’t anything private about it, the bathroom door was so rotten it didn’t sit on the bottom rollers so there was a large gap between the frame and door, ensuring that anyone sharing the room get to see you on the toilet and in the shower. We ended up using the share facilities to protect our modesty.

Best of all was the fact they emptied the bottle bins at 5am which is right in front of the bedrooms, the crashing and banging continued for 15 minutes, only to be followed by the sound of the bins being dragged & wheeled round the front. Extremely disappointed by this as we needed a good night’s sleep after a long drive, it completely ruined that day!

The ventilation in the rooms is ridiculously poor, so be prepared to boil in your bed, or you can run the risk of leaving the ranch slider open. However, be careful as the only sockets in the room are located right next to the door, ideal for any potential thief.

If you have any car with less ground clearance than a monster truck DO NOT park around the back as the car park exit is in such a bad state of repair you are guaranteed to cause serious damage, which for me was the icing in the cake.

We have stayed here with friends on a few occasion now, but never again! Basically, if you are traveling with a group avoid this place, you’ll be able to find much cheaper, cleaner, friendly and suitable accommodation in a local motel.

Room Tip: Avoid twin rooms on to the courtyard, 5am recycling is bound to get on your goat!
