“Beautiful house, charming host, lovely dog.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2009

Beautiful old colonial style house with original features, and beautifully restored. John is the best of hosts, and made us feel so welcome and at home. The bedrooms and facilities are excellent. Couldn't ask for more.

John provided us with lots of information about where to eat, visit, and relax. Top of the list for hotels.

As soon as I had walked passed teh beautiful Loki and the attractive exterior into the hallway of Robertsone House, I was in love. It is my dream home, full of beautiful wood and character, as was our host - full of character, that is! The rooms were very simply decorated, but the period furniture was very in keeping. We had the Gold Room, with its claw foot bath in the en suite. It was perfect and my other half enjoyed relaxing in the bath. John greeted us with wine and home-made cake. He admitted he hadnt made it, but he does a neighbours garden and she bakes him cakes. We appreciated his gardening!! John is a Brummy to our surprise, but what he didnt know locally was probably not worth exploring. He made recommendations not found in our guide books and we thoroughly enjoyed them. We only wish we could have stayed longer. John's almost casual approach made you feel very much at home and he invited you to help yourself to the fridge contents! He was the only host we had who didnt worry when you had breakfast. It was continental, but so much choice and quantity, it was fine. He puts the breakfast out and then will pop the fresh back into the fridge if you oversleep and tells you in advance to just help yourself to it from the fridge. People warned us that Rotarua smells. We didnt find it that bad and certainly didnt notice it at Robertson House. We would love to go back. Dont stay anywhere else (unless it clashes with us and it would be the last room!)

Robertson House is a wonderful property which has been lovingly restored by the host, John. Our room (Gold Room) was absolutely gorgeous and the bathroom was to die for!

John is the best B&B host we have ever encountered on our rather varied travels. His knowledge of ,and enthusiasm about, the local area is unsurpassed and we were really, really thankful for his hints and tips.

The glass of wine upon arrival and the midnight ginger cake made us feel very much at home and Loki the dog is a great big, friendly bundle of white fur.

We can't really say anymore other than if we ever find ourselves by way of Rotorua again, there is no question about where we'll be staying!

John was a wonderfully warm and welcoming host with excellent suggestions about dining and activities. We did everything John suggested and could not have possibly done better (including Waimangu volcanic valley and the Polynesian Spa - thank you for lending us the towels!) The Robertson House is immaculately kept, the rooms cozy, breakfast excellent, and Loki the samoyed friendly and beautiful. Thank you, John, from your San Francisco friends!

John is the best host that we met during this trip! We really enjoyed spending two days with such a great hospitality, warmly welcome (and even a great bye and bye!).When do we go back? For sure, soon or later!
Kids miss the dog "Loki"... a good experience for our daughter!
PS: Many things to do in Rotorua (again, ask John! he really knows where to go). Cheers from the French Family from HK.

Its difficult to know what to write here as everyone says much the same thing, and exactly what I would say.

The house is beautiful - a real period gem: everything you need is there, and John is - and I guarantee this - the best, most helpful and friendly host you will ever fine in a BnB. Loci the dog is also lovely. He's a sort of white fluffy husky but really cuddly and reminded me of my cat (I know another one of these dogs in a hotel in Wales who is just the same. They are a lovely breed - I wish I could remember the name).

We were only in Rotorua for a short time - it was really just somewhere to stay before flying South and I didn't have any particular expectations. However, with John's excellent recommendations for food and sightseeing we had a great 20 or so hours in this vibrant and attractive city. Rotorua is one place I would definitely visit again if in new Zealand. And I wouldn't look round for accommodation - it would be Robertson house.

Robertson House was the highlight of our stay in New Zealand as the period property is full of character and has been beautifully restored by John. Ask him about the ghost :-). Rooms are large, clean and comfortable and tea, coffee, biscuits & cakes are available from the kitchen at any time. John (and Loki the dog) is an excellent host and will help & advise with what to see & do in and around Rotorua. Braekfast is continental, but good selection of fresh fruit, cereal, breads, jams etc. Excellent value for money too compared to other 'boutique' accommodation.

  • Liked — Warm welcome and made to feel at home throughout stay.
  • Disliked — having to leave
