“Freezing night but a great warm up!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

We decided to do the mud pool and spa after traveling all day to arrive in Rotorua. We arrived after dark and the wind was freezing. We were a bit disappointed that the weather would spoil our experience. Instead, I think it added to it. My eyes were really sore from the sulphur and my nerve endings tingled but it was an experience we had to have whilst visiting NZ. We stayed approx 1 hour so it turned out a very expensive spa activity. The smell seemed to hang around a while.

“An Interesting Experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

We enjoyed the walk around the Thermal wonderland very much and I think it is safe to say that it was the highlight of our trip to Rotorua. Of particular interest was the 2.5 meter high mud volcano and the gorgeous waterfall where the warriors bathed. That looked as though it came straight out of a picture book of paradise.

The mud spa however, wasn't as enjoyable. We got vouchers to do this and just as well because if I had paid the $75pp entry fee I would have been even more disappointed.

We didn't like the open changing rooms. There is nowhere private to change which is fine for some but each family member here does like their privacy. The other major drawback for me was that there is no roof on the dressing rooms (just a shade sail cloth) so it is very very cold to change if the weather isn't sunny and it just so happened that it was pouring with rain and a bit windy when we visited. So we got cold.

We all found both the mud spa and sulphur pool too hot to really enjoy so we only stayed in 15 mins for the mud pool (I know the limit is 20 minutes here) and probably only 10 -15 minutes in the sulphur pool as well.

The experience was not quite what we expected so we won't be back to do that again BUT as I said first, the walk is amazing (even in the rain!) and that part I would highly recommend.

“Love-it-or hate it....it pongs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

You either love-it-or absolutley loath-it. Yet annually thousands of visitors brave or ignore the vibe to enjoy the spectacles. Aside from this attraction, there is stunning scenery in the Rotorua district. Lots of idyllic picnic spots like Hamurana Springs,a hole of crystal-clear water which bubbles from an emerald spring that flows into the lake. Walk past the groves of magnificent redwood trees and savour the wildlife.
Rotorua is easy to get around,as its city is set in a grid like pattern. The streets flow from the lake to town. Sure its commercial, but what the hack, there's a plethora of First-class heritage B&B's and any accommodation to suit.
At the end of the Government gardens, you can soak your hardened body in this thermally heated swimming pool. Afterwards smell the sulpher pits's bubble and fume behind the manicured rosebeds and bowling lawns. If the pong is good for the roses, think what benefits your skin will accrue!!... The high point is the tudor style bath-house-spa. Enjoy,

“Perfect Relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

We have visited Wai Ora Spa Hell's gate and was absolutely perfect. Friendly staff explained us the procedures and nice warm mud and sulphur bath had and awesome effect for the skin. After the bath was nice smooth and soft. It was very pleasant that we could enjoy relaxing time under the night sky and just by ourselves. Was romantic. Will be great if the complex decide to have a restaurant as well, because the spa made us quite hungry. Thank you for the nice relaxing evening. Michaela & Phillip, Mamaku Blue
