This volcanic rift valley was created on 10 June 1886 by the volcanic eruption of Mount Tarawera. The valley is filled with steaming and spouting geothermal lakes, pools, and streams. The walk is all down hill and only takes about an hour. We took the boat trip on Lake Rotomahana which lies at the base of Mount Tarawera. The boat took us counteclockwise around the lake spotting multiple sites of active geothermal activity. It was raining while we were on the walk and appreciated being loaned large umbrellas. We have to thank Trudi and Harvey James for their great kindness. The van that brought us here was unable to return. Harvey was able to give us back $30 of the $40 we paid for van round trip and his wife, Trudi, who runs the cafe at Waimangu, went way out of her way and gave us a ride back into Rotorua and even stopped at Tepuia allowing me to make a purchase there. Harvey operates Waimangu under contract. Trudi is one of the most lovely persons we have ever met! In addition she is a great cook and baker! Try anything in the cafe and I guaranty you will love it! God bless both of them!
