Have just got back from the Wai-o-Tapu.... all I can say is WOW!! This is a must see while you are in Rotorua... or even in the North Island as a whole!
We got there at 10.20am in time to watch the Geyser errupt! I thought this would be a natural thing but somebody adds soap to it in order for it to go off. I thought this was a little disappointing at first but he explain that it could go off at any time so they give nature a helping hand in order for everyone to be able to see it!
After the geyser we had breakfast in the cafe which has a lot of choice and is reasonably priced. We also had a look around the gift shop and boughts some of the mud masks... again reasonably priced!
The park has 3 circular tracks going around it, a red track, from which you can take the orange track which then again connects to the yellow track! We did all three... twice! It was really easy to find your way around so you see everything and I think people of all fitness levels would be able to manage the whole thing! There are a lot of stairs though!
The whole walk was unbelievably fascinating! It felt like we were on another planet or in a fantasy world! The champagne pool and devils bath are both incredible... they do really need to be seen to be believed!
The only down side of the whole day was the awful smell which is worse in some places than others... take a hankerchief with you to cover your nose!
Great day so glad we did it!

This is an excellent attraction, the geyser and mud pool interesting, and the walks beautiful and offering lots of different types of thermal displays. Its a beautitful walk that was even managed by our 2.5 year old who was fascinated. She fell asleep on the walk back though and we wished we brought the pram, even though you need to "stash" in to do the final part of the walk but the first two parts are pram friendly with only a few steps to negotiate. The walkways are clearly marked and the brochure outlines a brief but informative description of what you are looking at. The whole walk, with toddler in tow, took us 2 hours but you can do it in much much less. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Wai-O-Tapu.

Having spent an afternoon at Te Puia watching a geyser erupt naturally, we decided to skip Wai-o-tapu’s Lady Knox geyser and see the main part of the park while everyone else was at the geyser. What a choice. It was like having the park to ourselves. It was a great experience walking thru the steam and formations by ourselves. As another reviewer wrote, I have photos, but they don’t really do it justice.

We walked the entire park. The third loop was especially interesting but you do need to be able to go up and do fairly steep stairs and over rough terrain in places.

I recommend seeing several of the thermal parks. They are different and all enjoyable.

Wai-o-tapu also has an excellent picnic area that I wish we had used.

This is the best geothermal attraction in Rotorua. Be prepared for the smell and don't stand in the "steam" as you will get the full aroma of rotten egg gas! Every sight is very interesting with things ranging from boiling mud to a boiling lake and a lime green lake. All the sights are close to each other and the walking tracks are very easy.

Good value for money. even our teenage sons found it a great experience.

We liked this the best of the few thermal parks we visited. The Devils bath has to be seen to be believed. Also the champagne pool was WOW! We did tracks 1, 2 and 3 with kids 9, 7 and 2 and it was do-able, some carrying of the little one but do-able. The colours here were the most spectacular.
