“Nature displaying its power.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

This park is a very interesting direct exposure to the volatile nature that has shaped this part of the world accross millions of years.

There are several routes that one can follow , allowing for all levels of ability and time availability.

The initial attraction is a small geyser at the entrance to the park, you need to be early in the morning (check times in advance, early means around one hour after opening) in order to see the talk and the geyser in action.

After that you can walk in the park at your leisure discovering all the different geological features consisiting in hot water pools of different colours depending on the minerals found.

It is recommended for last to visit the mud pools in the way out of the park, this will complete an interesting and quite different day out.

Don't be put off by the very pungeant sulphuric smell, in all likelyhood you have not seen something like this before.

The shop in the visitors centre is well stocked with memorabilia, it is worth having a look.

“The colours are exquisite... and I love the bubbling mud!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

They have geysers, rock formations, amazing colours and bubbling mud... do I need to go on?
We'd been a few years earlier and seen the Lady Knox Geyser at 10:15am, so this time we had plenty of time to do all three sections of the walk (approx 75mins) at a more relaxed pace.
The third section (which starts at the Bridal Veil Falls) warns that a reasonable level of fitness is required, and with the number of stairs to navigate, I would 2nd that recommendation. But it was worth the effort to see the Lake Ngakoro Waterfall.
The Champagne Pool is a particular highlight for me, the mix of colours is beautiful and we managed to make it back to the Visitor centre just before the rain started.
After a bit of shopping, and a morning snack from the cafe, we took the short drive to the Bubbling Mud. It may not interest everyone, but I could watch it for hours, so the viewing platforms were well placed and clearly well maintained.

“An impressive display of nature!”

As someone from Australia seeing first hand what the presence of active volcanoes can do to to change the landscape of an area is amazing! A good experience which I would definitely recommend to anyone going to Rotorua.

“Amazing wonders of nature”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

It is really a wonderland. We spent a very pleasant half day in the park and were quite amazed at the different types of geothermal activity in the area. The bubbling mud pools which are outside the reserve we something special. Athough the lady knox geyser is more of a show with the eruption being manually triggered it was still very informative. A highly recommended place to visit.
