Owner description: Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

“Nice, but too commercial”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

It is an interesting experience, with friendly and well performing artists, and a fascinating Maori "village" built in the woods.
Afterwards, however, we did not really know much more about the Maori - just a few tidbits. Nothing about their original history - where they came from, when, why, how many canoes. What was life like before the white man came. How did their society function, what did they eat (apart from enemies). How did society cope when the white man came...?
This feels like a theme park - too many people at one time - a number of entertainment stations - food not particularly good. Nor really worth the money.

Kia ora and thank you for your review; we always value the opportunity to listen to feedback from our customers.
I am happy to hear you found our evening experience interesting, and enjoyed our performers and our interactive Pre-European Maori Village.
While your feelings toward learning nothing about the original history, it is important to consider that our evening experience is a snapshot of our cultural history, which we have perfected over the last 23 years that Tamaki Maori Village has been operating, to give our visitors an insight into our culture and who we are as a people today - within a 3 & 1/2 hour tour. We provide guided transportation with storytelling about the migration to our village, after the traditional Maori ceremony, visitors spend time in our interactive village, learning about different warrior training techniques, as well as demonstrations on the art of carving and ta moko (tattooing) you then witness the lifting of the hangi meal, before entering our ancestral meeting house for a powerful cultural performance, view a short movie sharing the past 200 years of our history, before the traditional hangi feast. We always receive wonderful comments on our food, so I am sorry to hear that the traditional hangi meal is not what you expected.
Our entire site encompasses over 25 acres, including a native Tawa forest within which our Maori Village is located, and we do cap our total number of people on our evening show to ensure intimacy of the experience. Thank you again for your feedback and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday in New Zealand

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Excellent service, spectacular performance. Child friendly, excellent hangi. We got picked up on time from hotel and taken to the bus. The bus driver was great, very funny. In fact all the staff were great. After the evening we got taken back to hotel. Great evening. Well worth it.

“good cultural experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

The cultural experience was interesting and explored a range of traditional aspects of Maori life. It was a bit touristy in parts but the staff seemed to appreciate genuine interest in their culture. The evening was enjoyable and is definitely worth doing.

“The Best of all Maori Experiences!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

I experienced all of the maori cultural evenings that Rotorua has to offer and in my opinion Tamaki was the best! You actually get to enter and walk around the village and take part in their various activities before being seated for the show. Most places you are seated immediately and just sit and watch.
Tamaki gives you the opportunity to have a hands on experience and to even speak with the Maori villagers before the show. The dining area is also gorgeous!
I think what would make this experience better is if they could have had the Maori sit with us for the meal so we have more time to interact and speak with them. :)
