After some issues in a prior stay, i was offered 1night free in a king spa with breakfast from Katherine, which i thought was very kind. As we have been to Rydges 4 times prior, i thought we would spend out wedding aniversary there. Some positives, some negatives.
Yes the hotel is a bit dated, but rooms are very large, bed is a proper king not 2 singles tagged together like some other places. Front Desk for my stay (Rebekah) was helpful. Im not really a fan of firm beds, but thought the bed was very nice. Pillows not so, but better than many places ive stayed.
So, the negatives.
Dust galore in 305. Ceiling fan was covered in it. The Vent in bathroom had a bit too. Quite a few higher surfaces had pile of dust too. Not so great for anyone with allegies, or doesnt like the idea of a ceiling fan by bed spinning around with a ton of dust. Def need an adjustment in housekeeping protocols. Photos of this attached
Dead bugs all over the blinds in spa room. Quite disgusting really. Photos attached
Again, issues with bill on checkout. Maybe somehow selected 1 person stay not 2? 99.9% sure i selected 2, but hey. Sorted easily however which was nice, so didnt need to pay 2x extra breakfast charged that should have been included, so no drama's. As i never got an email confirmation i cannot check to know for sure if somehow i made a mistake, or what happened.
Noisey. Level 3 is def not my preference. I always ask for high floor where avail, as at night if person above you walks around or goes to toilet you get to hear it unfortunatly. Nothing than can really be done about this, but worth noting for those who have issues sleeping at night, get in early with your booking and request top floor. I unfort had a few issues sleeping from it, but thats only due to an over active above neighbour :) Not the hotels fault.
-Breakfast. New breakfast was advertised, so was looking forward to our 2 mornings of breakfasts. Very mixed there too. New design, so food kept in nice crockpots. Looks great but not very functional as not hard to hold sometimes hot lid, serve food, put lid back, and kinda a pain compared to the old buffet serving method.
-Juice looked fancy, but unfortunatly made from syrup. One morning one of them tasted as if it hadnt been watered down, very thick and syrupy. On the second day it also seemed like we had to ask for things if low. I.e no hot water so asking for that. Couldnt be bothered asking for more juice, as was none topped up while we were there (~9sm). Im not a fan of ask for things that should be avail system. Granted it saves Rydges money from wastage though.
-Toasters. Granted all fancy, but muffins dont really come out easily so hard to remove. They have metal tongs to do so??? Not really the safest, as was illustrated with a younger kid ferriting around with metal tongs and a toaster to get it help. Naturally we helped him out, cause it didnt seem the safest.
-mixed standards. 1 day has browns very very crunchy, somewhat over cooked, next day really nice. 1day poached eggs we more..... well lets say not poached eggs, next day really well formed. So guess it depends on chef of the day.
Overall, not worth $54 for a couple, however when done at time of booking was closer to $30, which considering cafe options around $15-20pp, i think its still a good option.
One of the things we always look forward to when at rydges rotorua was breakfast. Now not so much. still nice but, not AS nice and user friendly as previously.
-Dinner. Didnt do dinner thi stay. manu the same as last few times we stayed, which is very very limited for vegetarians (wife had waldolf salad previously and never wants that again, so doesnt really leave much which is a shame) Plenty of nice places around for dinner though.
Going back to cleaniness. There appeared to be a leak of some kind above bar, as stains running down wall and window above bar. Not the greatest sight when your sitting in resteraunt, and surprised it was still there after 3days, Maybe permanent stains? If so chuck some paint on them!
Was surprised the spa room didnt get towels replaced or bath gel etc. Bathroom had towels replaced and bed made, but bathmat towels and ammentities not touched in spa room. Pretty sure in the past they used to service this room too.
Thought walking through the hotel wasnt very pleasent when we returned from an outing. i.e wine glasses, knives, and something random (cant remember what - just remember it was strange) outside doors, and a rubbish bag sitting next to lifts. This seems a bit silly, as there is a staff access corridor next to lifts where this could have been placed, as there was certainly noone in site or nearby who looked like there were going to move it.
-Showers etc. I challange management to actually spend a night in the hotel (surprise so rooms not cleaned specially for them) and experience what we get, I enjoy a good shower. The shower heads in rydges rotorua are nice, good power etc. However, every time a guest turns on a tap, flushes a toilet, or it seems has.turns off shower the temp changes, sometimes from nice temp, to stone cold, to scoulding hot. Good way to promote short showers as the challange was to get in and out asap prior to significant temp changes.
I picked up 1 night king spa with breakfast for 216, 1 night free due to previous issues, and 1 night $140 no breakfast. I would have been quite unimpressed with overstandard had the 3night stay cost us $650. But it cost me nearly half that, so i was quite happy.
Priority Guest rewards. Only once have I received the 'free welcome drink' voucher, and that was a couple of stays ago now. 1 out of 4 isnt really a great hit rate. maybe you need to ask? seems silly though when it says you get it by being a member and going back to a hotel. Also 1pm checkout has never actually been applied. Ive always called down to confirm, and find out its obv another perk of the priority guest reward scheme you have to ask for, notjust receive as i imagine you should.
Would have appreciated air con unit in this day and age. Im sure there is prob a refit project, as large year had a room with one. I was extremely hot first night, and didnt want to open windows to let misqutoes in. Would have loved being in that room with aircon that night! Small things, that prob cost alot in refitting, but certianly what alot of guest expect in 4.5star hotel.
Bottom line, pretty mixed and average. I would return, but only if i pick up cheap rates when on special. I will probably shop around next time check out other options and see if there are better options if no specials on as i dont think its good value experience when you read issues above for over $200 night (with breakfast). But if i was going down with my wife for wedding aniversary again next year, id stay here again. At least i know what to expect and what the floors are. Stayed in some significantly worse places!!!
Also, would have loved outside floodlights to have light diffuser of some sort, directing light. Found in 305, light from outside building floodlights came into room from above and below blackout curtains. Havent noticed this on multiple previous stays so guessing it must have just been luck of the draw.
Avoid rooms close to main road for noise.
Ask for 4th Floor if you are a light sleeper to minimise...
