“good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2009

stayed here 2 nights during coach tour very efficient reception, porterage rooms clean and well maintained, staff friendly minutes walk to lakeside or centre of town. if the wind is in the wrong direction the sulphur smell did carry down to the hotel area but inside hotel we had no problems with smells did not eat in, as plenty of nice places to eat very close by

We stayed here two nights and it was perfect. A one minute walk to (and views of) the lake, just on the edge of the main high street and even organises its own Maori evenings! The room was the usual high spec of Novotel hotels, with a fridge etc. and a nice bathroom. There was a computer in the lobby with free internet and the room only cost NZD$79 on an accor.com supersale - a bargain!

We went to Rotorua as a part of our honeymoon trip in Dec 08 and stayed at this hotel in a junior suite with lake view. The hotel is centrally located, right in front of the lake and near all the restaurants. Yes, they do have free parking etc. but overall the place is too commercial, touristy and lacks character. The staff lacked the usual warm NZ hospitality which you would experience at other places. They did not add miles on my frequent flier card even after an email reminder. Would definitely not recommend this hotel for honeymooners.

We stayed 2 nights whilst visiting Rotorua. Location is on Lake Rotorua with beautiful views from our rooms and has free parking. Guest laundry is on first floor and each use is $2.00 but unfortunately the dryers overheat easily so therefore are often not working. Breakfast was very good (especially the scrambled eggs) Hotel staff very helpful allowing us to check in at 11.00am instead of 2.00pm (withonly 1 hour's notice during school holidays). I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Located close to the lake and heart of the town, this hotel provides everything you would expect from a global chain. Public areas are huge and clean, staff are efficient, the room was clean, spacious and comfortable, with the bathroom obviously recently refurbished to an average standard, everything was just average. Somehow this failed to meet the usual level of friendly NZ hospitality. The hotel isn't bad in any way, it just felt soulless and I felt removed from the ambience of the town when staying here.

Choose this hotel if you are looking for three star anonymity. It's got loads of free parking, is quiet and I'm sure any request you have can be dealt with. I just felt like I was a cog in a wheel, rather than a valued guest.

Only one complaint, the huge minibar fridge made a lot of noise throughout the night.

My experience of other Novotels has always been at best average but this place was great. We had a large corner room which was very comfortable, good TV and plenty of sitting space as well as the bed. Bathroom was clean and great shower. The hotel has hot pools which pong just like the rest of Rotorua of sulphur, They were quite small but well maintained. Bar had good happy hour drinks. Rotorua was a pleasant enough place despite the smell, although even on a weekend everything was dead by 9.30pm. make sure you go out to eat early we went to one place at 8.30pm and the kitchen was closed. There is a good selection fo restaurants though and we had a good meal every night. Take a flight over the dormant volcano crater and the surrounding lakes as it is only from the air you can really appreciate how the earth has been shaped by the volcanic eruptions. The location of the hotel is good with a view of the lake and just at the end of a row of restaurants and bars.

Pros:
-Good location: close to restaurants, lake, central area
-nice clean rooms
-lots of free parking

Cons:
-We booked a Queen room a few weeks ahead through expedia (you pay when you book). We checked in late and they tried to give us a double room. But I had prepaid for a Queen room. They were completely booked and the only other option they could offer us was a Queen handicapped room. It was OK but kind of a pain because the shower was open in the bathroom and everything got soaked. We got a bottle of champaign to compensate us.
