We returned to the Millenium Hotel in Rotorua, New Zealand after a gap of a few years. It hasn't changed very much. The hotel has a very impressive and spacious lobby with lots of very comfortable chairs and settees. As they have a checkout policy of 10:00am it is good to have somewhere comfortable to sit whilst waiting for your taxi or coach. It still has a very good carved wooden screen which is carved in the Maori style. The room is good and reasonably spacious. It has a very comfortable king sized bed and a small desk whick overlooks Lake Rotorua. There is a balcony and a patio window/door that opens out onto the balcony. It is yet another New Zealand hotel that still has shower curtains and the shower over the bath. They do, however, provide a rubber non slip mat here to place on the bottom of the bath, which not all hotels do.
There are some quirks about the hotel. It doesn't have wi-fi in the rooms. You need to have a wired connection. When there are 2 guests in a room and both have technology with them only one person can work at a time. There is wi-fi in the lobby but sometimes you need to be able to work in your room. Having made that observation I am not sure what percentage of their guests want to use their computers or iPads whilst staying there.
When we arrived the air-conditioning was not working. The room was very hot. The next evening we kept out patio door open to cool the room whilst we were watching TV before going to bed. We looked up to see the ceiling was covered in trout flies. The receptionist brought some fly spray up to the room and they all fell dead all over the bed, carpet and furniture. We slept in a different room that night and the room was deep cleaned the next morning. A card or note in the room warning guests not to leave doors and windows open when the lights are on might be a good thing to do.
Another quirk, one of the lifts never stops on the 2nd floor going down, which is where reception is. It insists on going down to level 1 and then moving back to level 2. When going up in the same lift it always stops at the 3rd floor even though there is nobody there.
In previous stays at the hotel we have stayed in their suite. It is incredibly 'dated' and unless you are considering having private meetings I would advise anyone to stay away from it. We took membership of 'The Club' for our stay. It is no fault of the hotel that we ended up being very busy most evenings so didn't get to truly sample their offerings. The breakfast in the morning is basic in the extreme. I haven't had tinned pears, apricots and mandarin oranges since I was a child. I also like to be offered more than one cup of tea. It would be a good idea to have a self service machine where guests can manage theur own drinks. On the basis of occupancy during our stay being the Club Host must be one of the more boring roles to be carried out. You may be better off not joining 'The Club' and taking your chance on breakfast in the restaurant.
The good news is that most of the staff we met were very friendly and committed to giving a great level of service. On our first night we ate in the restaurant. The food was excellent, as it always has been here and the service was very attentive, efficient and friendly. There is an experienced Receptionist on the front desk who is incredibly friendly and knowledgable. She is a great asset to this hotel and would be to any other hospitality establishment she worked in. It was always a real joy to see her.
The important thing about this hotel is that it is what it is. They know their market and that tends to be the type of guest they have stay there who are typically on organised tours. We would certainly return and would recommend the hotel to friends. As long as you arrive with the right level of expectation and don't expect 5* you will have a great time.
