REGAL GEYSERLAND, ROTORUA
This place has good points and bad - and a rather silly name. There are countless motels to choose from in Rotarua, most of them on the main road to Taupo (Fenton Street), so it is worth ringing round to find a good deal and good facilities. Regal Geyserland is 2 kms from the city centre. In the rooms facing the geyser, there is no traffic noise. We paid $110 per night for a comfortable suite (double bed, sofa) and unequalled view of the Pohuto geyser in the Whakarewarewa thermal area. The suites have a washbasin which doubles as sink, kettle, minibar/fridge, coffee plunger / cafetiere, but no microwave or cooking rings, to heat up meals or snacks. The shower is adequate but there is also a Jacuzzi style bath (not tried). The tiles above it had evidence of the previous bathers’ hair. There is C.H. in the main room but not in the (very cold) bathroom. There is a TV with Sky but no DVD or video, and at the time of our stay no broadband in the rooms; we had to ask reception for a hairdryer. The spare blanket had holes in it. The decor is showing its age, with paint and paper peeling in places. Staff are not particularly friendly. There is an iron and ironing board in the room, a guest washer and drier ($2 each), and a breakfast room ($16.50 for a not very good cooked breakfast) as well as a restaurant open for dinner. Otherwise you can drive to the town centre to eat at a wide range of restaurants and cafes. The main plus point is the geyser views and the accessibility of the Te Pau complex with Maori guided tours of the Whakarewarewa thermal area. But off season there are probably better deals to be had.
