“Great place to taste orienteering as a family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2014

Maps available to buy ($3 each) at the information centre, all levels from easy (30 minutes) to average (2.4km and 1 hour) to hard.

We did the average route and found 7 of the 8 markers - there are clues on the back (remember to check them - we forgot).

Lovely walk, wide paths and plenty to see. Good parking and a coffee cart right there.

“Plenty of Hiking Tracks to Choose From”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

The Whakarewarewa Forest offers a number of different hiking tracks to choose from: short, easy walks, to multi-hour half-day tracks. It is worth stopping by the visitor center to chat with the friendly, knowledgeable people about which track may best suit you, your travel companions and the time you have available.

The Pohaturoa Track (about 7.5km) briefly skirts the edge of the Redwood forest, but offers fantastic views of the city, lake and abundant geothermal attractions. The Waitawa Track is only 3.4km, but provides a great opportunity to walk through a stand of 100-year old, transplanted California Redwoods.

While not as impressive as actually visiting the Redwoods of California, USA., this is a close (and nonetheless awe-inspiring) second.

“Outdoor heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

I had a long run in the forest, which was amazing. You can buy a Manky, which is a map on a hanky, very cool idea! With a manky on my wrist I could choose the right paths without being lost. Perfect place for running, horse riding, biking, or just simply walking with different paths for each.

“ALMOST PREHISTORIC FEELING”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

The closeness of such a huge forest------height wise----Right in the city, well almost, was pretty cool.
A nice walk and breathing such clean fragrant air felt really good.

“Love the place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

For someone who grew up in city in Asia, we don't see tall trees often. This place is amazing and being surrounded by trees and only trees! The walk is nice and easy, good for a morning or evening walk before dinner if you don't have much planned.
