“Great forest, lots of walks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

Beautiful forest, huge trees with red wood, and nice colours everywhere.
We did the Pohaturoa track because we wanted to see the Pohutu geyser. We waited at the lower lookout and 10 or 15 minutes after we saw the Pohutu geyser erupting (maybe we were lucky? but then we stayed there for half an hour and it was almost erupting all the time)
It is a little bit far but you can still see the water, we used the zoom of the camera to see it better (if you have binoculars if could be great !)
Anyway we found it way better than spending about $50 to see it via Te Puia ! and even without the geyser view, the walk was great.
We'd like to go back to do other walks, and also try some bike tracks which seemed very nice !

“This was a great and relaxing free activity.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

This was a great and relaxing free activity. The hubby and I chose a 3 hour walk, but you can choose shorter or longer walks to suit your needs. The trees were absolutely magnificent. We also had some great views of the city and the forest in general. To note: watch out for bikers, as they might come trailing past you at fast speeds.

“Beautiful Place to visit and its free”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

This place is wonderful - with walking, cycling, dog walking and horse riding trails. The trees are awesome, its well signposted and we had a beautiful half an hour walk around one of the shortest trails which was wonderful, Would definitely visit here again.

“Like being in another world....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

The forest gave us a sense of surrealism as we walked amongst these giant sentinels. Look up and you see a canopy of tapered needles with a backdrop of feathery ferns that hover above you like a huge umbrella of greenery. Back at ground level you are dwarfed by the towering trunks which gives these trees it colourful name!

We drove here in around 5 mins from Rotorua or if you have the means and energy by bike/walk, or take local transport – the City Ride bus that passes nearby.

At the Visitors Centre we got excellent information on the various hiking trails and the approximate time each trail takes.Their website is also very useful and informative. Restrooms, parking, picnic area are here plus the centre has quality gifts, drinks, ice cream and snacks.

The VC closes at 530pm in summer but with the extra light the trails are still feasible beyond that. In fact we saw more locals jogging or cycling then we did visitors. Entry is free however you can invest in a good map of the entire area for around $10.00.
We just followed the coloured markers dotted around the trails.

One or two easy trails gets you in amongst the redwoods and lush forest floor, other require more time and energy with one that takes several hours. We took the Green trail with the suggested time of 90 mins round trip with a few challenges along the way.
It gave us the beauty of the all the different species of trees, pristine pools of water and limited views over the City and the Lake from a small overlook.

This forest is tucked away from the other main tourist sights without venturing too far away from Rotorua. It’s worth the time whatever trail you choose….it’s like being in another world!

Happy Trails!
