“Lake Waikaremoana with 2 kids (2 and 4 years old)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2009

We did Lake Waikaremoana trek with Walking Legends, from November 8th to 11th 2009, with our children (2 and 4 years old). It’s been a wonderful experience that I’d recommend to every family that likes to be outdoors!!

Hilary, from Walking Legends, has done an incredible job! She arranged a trip especially for us, though we will be travelling with a group of adults formed by Walking Legends. We felt cared for, a way that only a mother can do…

With the boat as a second plan, we walked as much as the kids can do. After that, in mid-afternoon, we had the opportunity to take the boat (thanks Nigel), and go for a ride! The little legs were so happy to arrive safe and sound at the hut, and not too tired to enjoy the evening meal with the rest of the group. We felt part of that group, even if we didn’t walk all the way.

The meals and the snacks were diversified and tasty. Kids can be a bit fussy sometimes, so we brought some of their “favorites” with us, especially for the snacks. That proved worth it.

Even if it was the first time they had as young children as ours, the guides (thanks Brad, Jamie and Nigel) did an excellent job with the kids! Bravo! They put NO pressure. None. We went at our pace, stopping for everything and for nothing, as a family does when walking in the wild.

We felt adventure, with security as a guardian. We had a lot of fun, with memories full of funny people, caring for our happiness. Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to enjoy the wild beauty of lake Waikaremoana, with two young walkers of 2 and 4 years old.

If you think of doing it, go for it!

“Walking Legends has to be the best choice for a tour!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2009

Hi Hilary,

Thank you so much for arranging to have Brad give us the Walking Legends tour of the Rotorua area of New Zealand. He was a blast from start to finish! Now that we've returned to our home in New Mexico, we find it amazing that we were ever in a place that is so GREEN! The photos are beautiful, but more important than those is the appreciation of the history of the place that Brad shared. His love of the natural surroundings was obvious, and he is a gentle and very well informed companion with whom I could have spent, easily, several days. I was a little worried about the dip in the hot springs that brought our day to a close, but even that was fun and a change from the norm. In short, we couldn't be happier with our tour from Walking Legends, we recommend you (and Brad) to anyone, and we think you added immeasurably to our first visit to New Zealand. Thank you!

“All I imagined guided walking could be and more.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2009

New Zealanders take their walking very seriously. As we were walking (in Canada we call it hiking) on the trails on the South Island of New Zealand, we found that the estimated time to complete the trail was usually about half what it would take us, so I was a bit worried that our tour with Walking Legends out of Whakatane on the North Island would be too much for me. That was not the case. Our guide was very clever at setting a pace which was challenging, but never more than I (the weak link in our small group of three adults) could handle. He took us to some amazing spots that we would have found difficult, if not impossible to get to on our own. He shared with us the legends (primarily Maori) connected with all the sites we visited in a way that was knowledgeable and entertaining.

We started day 1 on the cliffs around Whakatane, a very important location as this was where the Maoris first settled. From the window of our beautiful apartment (which Walking Legends found for us) we could see a statue on the rock at the entrance to the harbour. From our cliff view, our guide told us it is a stature of Wairaka, the chief's daughter, who made a decision to "Act Like a Man" (“Kia Whakatāne au i ahau”), picked up the forbidden paddle, and saved the canoe and all the women and children from drifting back to sea.

On Day 2 our guide managed to get us on a very special boat trip to Whale Island, which has restricted access as they try to restore it all to indigenous flora and fauna. In the afternoon we walked the trail of the Disappearing River and again learned the legends of its origin.

We had a great time and our only regret is that we did not have time in our itinerary for another day of walking.
