“Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2011 via mobile

Stayed for 1 night only and got upgraded from a 2-bed backpacker's room to a private double room for free! It's just perfect for a place to crash after a long day tour. It's also very near the shops and cafes. The bus stop is just outside astray too! Will definitely stay here again (longer!) when I come back to rotorua

Stayed 4 nights. 4 person bunk room was comfortable and clean but a little cramped. Not suitable for very tall or large people. The kitchen was well equipped and tidy but the place had no lounge seating. A couple of couches would have been nice.

Liked: Astray was in a great location near everything right in the centre of Rotorua. The staff were very friendly, informative and helpful (but not overbearing at all). The property was in a really good condition and the room was very smart and clean and quite stylish. There were nice outside seats by the kitchen which you can use if the weather is good. It was very cheap! Kitchen facilities quite good. We felt this place was good value for what you got. No real problems with noise. It seems to attract couples and families and is not a party place.

Disliked: The room was the cheapest available and it was TINY! Fine for a couple of nights but not recommended for much longer than that or if you have loads of stuff. There are a range of rooms though. The lock on one of the toilets was broken and we pointed it out but it didn't seem to be fixed while we were there. The kitchen was taken over by a large family for about 2 hours one night and we had to beg and plead to even get a glass of water! Another kitchen or a rule about cooking big meals would be good!!

The airport bus stopped right in front of the motel. The isite visitor centre was just a few minutes walk away from where all the coaches depart.. The motel had adequate facilities to make our stay comfortable. The best part of the motel were the hosts. They were very helpful and made our stay a memorable one. It was more like a home than a motel.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2011

Me and my two friends stayed there for two nights and during this time there was no warm water at all. We tried to complain during our stay, but the owners were away, when we called them they just hanged up on us as soon as we said there is no warm water. The weather was cold and rainy the whole weekend and having showers and washing hair in that weather in cold water was really miserable. When we wanted to leave and asked again for explanation the owner - instead of taking responsibility - came up with a really lame answer: because of the rain, there is flooding and there is no hot water. I asked the coffee shop across the road whether they had the same problem, they totally denied this. The owner asked for payment even before we saw our rooms and when we asked for a refund at leaving for the inconvinience she refused to do so, she said we can complain somewhere. One of my friends travelled here all the way from Hungary and was very upset with the "hospitality" that we experienced. I think dishonest, greedy people such as the owners of Astray Backpackers should not be allowed to overshadow the great experience of visiting Rotorua.

Once again we'd like to apologise to all our guests for being without hot water during the weekend of the severe rainstorms delivered by tropical cyclones Vania and Zelia.
Everything was done to bring back the hot water as soon as possible and it was like winning the World Cup when it returned.
All of our wonderful guests -except a group of three- showed amazing support and understanding in the extreme situation. We'd like to express our gratitude to you for that -Thank you very much.
Also a big thank you to our local tradesmen, who worked outside in the storm and rain and sacrificed their weekend to fix the problem.
Kind Regards
Frank & Sue

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2010

We are a family of four who initially booked the 4 bed dormitory, thinking that a once-in-a-while hostel experience would be an interesting one. One look into the hostel room however and we immediately changed our mind. The room is what it says, 4 beds in a room. The lower of the bunk beds were slightly raised to give more space for luggage and bags, otherwise there are absolutely no other room to hang your bags or clothes, or do any other thing even.

We decided to book the double room instead for 2 of our family members, leaving the other 2 to stay in the dorm. The receptionist/ owner was more than helpful, and patiently accommodated my requests to view and consequently purchase the double room. The double room was an improvement, there was more space, with a spacious bathroom and an area to prepare food via microwave (no stove provided). The bed was OK, it even has a TV hanging over it for watching while lying snugly in bed. My only problem was that again there was no place to hang our clothes (I like to air them) and we had to resort to draping them over the chairs provided.

But at the end of the day, I would still recommend the hostel to a friend (albeit only friends who are strictly on a budget) mainly because of the very helpful owner, who was kind and patient. He answered my questions about the area, and pointed out the places to visit in Rotorua. Definitely one of the more friendly receptionists that I;ve met over the course of my trip.
