“The only place to stay in Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2009

The Lake House was a unique experience, surpassing all expectations. Nothing was too much trouble; the level of anticipation of guests' needs was extraordinary; everything was done to make our stay comfortable and stimulating. We had stunning views, great food, a beautiful room with fresh flowers and invitations to join our hosts in the lounge for pre-dinner drinks. Ken and Carol were even happy to lend us their kayaks to row across the lake to Rotorua. We had high expectations as a result of our six week stay in New Zealand but nothing prepared us for this level of thoughtfulness.

This was my final stop after almost 2 weeks of hiking the Milford Track, Abel Tasman, Bay of Islands and other areas of the north and south islands with friends. It was a perfect end to a great trip. With only 2 guest rooms you can't help but feel like a part of the family. The house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. The guest rooms are very well appointed and immaculate. Female travelers will appreciate the soft linens, ironed sheets, fresh flowers and other details. Both rooms open onto a veranda and the sweeping green lawn (bordered by lovely roses and flowers) leads you about 75 feet to the lake. The small sand beach is perfect for walking as long as you would like. You can also just lie in bed and enjoy the lake view. I enjoyed the fresh baked muffins, breads and other goodies that were left for me every afternoon at tea time. Carol's breakfasts were substanial and delicious. Ken and Carol could not have been more helpful. They investigated and found the perfect horseback riding place for me, and made recommendations for the best thermal parks and other sites. The owners are a very well traveled and interesting couple. Originally from England, they lived and worked in New Zealand, then the United Arab Emirates and have retired in Rotorua. Bring a bottle of wine to share and you'll really enjoy listening to their stories. It was my favorite part of every evening.

Very enjoyable stay; fantastic views; wonderful breakfasts. Owners very helpful in suggesting things to do. Good restaurant to eat at 3 minutes walk away. Enjoyed a pre-breakfast swim in the lake each morning. Very peaceful. Highly recommended.

We sayed here for the last 2 nights of 2008 and had fantastic time. The new owners Ken and Carol were really helpful from the rapid response to emails, helping us book trips, to advice regarding where to visit.
Our kids (aged 13 and 11) especially loved the hot tub, and also the huge comfy bunks, the breakfasts, and kayaking/swimming in the lake.
All the extras had been thought of and having internet access was useful.
We liked all the short walks suggested eg Hamurana spings.
Memorable trip!
