Ok, if you want to get hung up about "Bed and Breakfast" everything you want from a B&B or hotel for that matter.
On planning our month long trip to NZ, I only pre-booked three stays, Decks of Paihia was one of those - I was looking to ensure that, whatever the accomodation had been like in the middle of our stay (we'd left three weeks so we;d have the flexibility to alter our itinerary) our holiday started and finished well and Decks certainly delivered with four nights of luxury - the kind of luxury you feel is hotel quality.
The driveway parking (which I can only compare to a ski slope without the snow) started the excitement. The house is fab, very modern with clean lines and very well maintained, the room was great, lots of room to move, hang garments and the bathroom was superb (although I don't envy Phil and Wendy cleaning them!). We never actually used the (in door) "common area" but it was there for guests to use if required but we certainly made the most of the outside and the pool when we had short days out.
Phil (and Wendy) were consumate professionals. Their hosting skills were honed so as not to be over whelming but just right - help / advice was at hand if needed but in a very subtle way.
After 23 nights in various NZ B&Bs you'd have thought we'd have seen and experienced it all, but Decks managed to equal the best in all ways.
We had carefully choosen Paihia because of it's geographic location and closeness to 90 mile beach but to be totally honest we could have been happy just staying local and make the most of the facilities and hospitality but of course we were in "travel mode" and it didn't quite work out like that!
Phil was full of local information, lots of hidden gems to look out for, Wendy was able to help us with some recommedations for our final two days in Auckland.
I have no reservation in recommending this place to anyone who wants to stay in the Bay of Islands, Mrs ChrisR200 was seriously sad to leave this home from home with nobs on, we will certainly go back here should we be lucky enough to go back to NZ.
