“Great Location, Wonderful Owners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2010

We booked at the last minute using wotif and got the last cabin, a 2 bedroom right on the carpark. It was a lovely room. They are small and ours didn't have room for more than beds and a wee kitchen, but the deck is a good size and had a lovely view across the valley.

The advantage of it was it is quiet in a town that isn't at that time of year (28th Dec - 1 Jan) and the location is brilliant for walking to the shops, the beach, the ferry and anything else you need. For little kids the school across the road has great playgrounds too.

They have a great range of games, and we had lots of fun with those, and DVD's, but no Sky TV. I think the room would have been too small for a family with teenagers if the weather had been bad and we had been stuck inside though.

When we arrived and I advised of our travel plans (unplanned for the week of New Year) Belinda helpfully warned me of the local drought (weather was awesome, hot and sunny every day) and that accommodation was scarce and pencil booked us for another two nights just in case. This was excellent advice. The town was packed and we stayed at the busiest time.

She told us about the New Years Eve fireworks which were a great way to see in the New Year with the kids, and oddly all the towns restaurants were pretty empty so we had no trouble getting a nice meal. Other nights tho', they were packed so go early if you have kids too feed.

She also warned us about the setting sun heating our room, so we left the curtains shut with the fan on and locked our room door but left the windows open and she said they were home all the time so would keep an eye. This was very helpful as it was a warm and sunny room.

Great location, good rooms, I'd go there again as long as the price was right. If others with sea views and pools were cheaper, I'd possibly try them.

Bay Cabinz was great value for money and so close to the wharf, cafes and restaurants. The cabins are a bit colourful inside (bright yellow and red) if you like that kind of thing! There are a lot of steps up to each one but the walk keeps you fit! We enjoyed it there as a base for sightseeing.

After ourselves & another couple from Canada traveled the North & South Islands for 28 wonderful days on the Magic Bus (YES WE ARE WELL OVER 50) but the Magic bus was great thanks to drivers like Chops, Mike, Donna(Flash don't ask) Trent (Lefty) & all the other drivers plus all the young backpackers that we met on the BUS it was a great experience.

The BAY CABINZ became our home to sit back & relax after a long 28 days. PETE, BELINDA & STAFF were the greatest at making our 17 days in total at the Cabinz as comfortable as possible. After some long days for the 4 of us taking in the all sites the Bay of Islands & Northland offer, the Cabinz were our HOME. AWAY FROM HOME. They were so clean, cozy, quiet & the steps & ramps to our cabin whipped us into shape for the 5 minute walk that got us to most places in Paihia, ie: main street 1 block & the King's tour building on the Wharf 2 blocks. THANKS AGAIN BELINDA & PETE for everything even booking a unexpected doctors appointment in town.

FROM TEAM CANADA : (JAN - ROD) & (JOE - JEAN) Thank you New Zealand.

P.S. our pictures of the trip are changed daily as background on our computer monitor reminding us of a wonderful experience.

  • Liked — Clean, quiet, close to everything, & great people (Kiwi's)
  • Disliked — 17 days was still not enough time
  • Tips/Secrets — You don't have to be young to enjoy this experience.

These are light, bright, clean and airy cabins! They are on a hill overlooking the school, bay and the BEST bakery in town!! This is not given enough attention in Lonely Planet and Moon. Newer owners were helpful and easy-going. Stay in the top cabins for privacy and a great view if you don't mind the hike up. The owners will lug your bags up too. Laundry, kichenettes and great porches! Highly recommended!!

Not too expensive either!

We stayed in the Bay Cabinz in January. Although not very spacious, the cabins were very well maintained & located close to shops in Pahia. The management were very friendly & helpful. We enjoyed our stay & would recommend it to others.
