“Spacious and great views of the bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2010

Spent 2 nights at Kingsgate and we wished we had booked for longer before moving on through our trip. We had a suite, which all come with bay view, but the first floor ones are the best. Ours was on the end so had windows on 2 walls so apartment was light and airy. Out of season meant the place was not very busy, which is probably why we had a suite for 6 so reasonably. Made use of the kitchenette to prepare a meal and it was equipped with the basics. bathroom had spa bath and large walk-inb shower and very nice toiltries. Lounge area large and french windows gave great view and opened on to balcony. In the middle of summer it would be fantastic. The hotel is on the main road, so it might be noisier with traffic and people in the summer, but it was relatively quiet and certainly no noisier than we are used to at home. The staff on reception were very friendly and welcoming, keen to put a name to the emails! Breakfast good, but cooked components could have been fresher and more attention paid to when such as milk and coffee ran out. Would look to stay again as still plenty to explore in the area. Paihia makes a great base for exploring the Northland area.

the Kingsgate is very clean and well located in the Bay of Islands. the room is spacious and comfortable enough - the bed was too soft for my taste! as that is the only thing i can criticise it cannot be too bad!
my overall statement is that it is ok.

A good location across the road from the sea, and close to restaurants, shops etc. Clean and comfortable room. Friendly helpful staff.

Clean. Pleasant service. Handy for the waterfront. Easy parking. Perhaps the stairs are a little narrow when carrying cases upstairs. Food mundane. 8/10

Right in the heart of the action. I loved the location of this Hotel. We were able to walk to the ferries and to the shops and restaurants easily. Room was very comfortable and nicely proportioned. Bar Fridge however was empty except for the milk but otherwise fantastic place.

We had booked a room with a view of the Bay - superb views from our room. Room was spacious, more an apartment, with lounge and kitchen. Breakfast was a simple buffet - adequate.
Location was excellent, close to the jetty and many restaurants. We walked to Waitangi along the shoreline. One day we caught the ferry from the jetty to Russell for a leisurely stroll round the village.

We had a wonderful 5 night stay at the Kingsgate, a beautiful suite overlooking the sea.
We found all the staff to be really helpful and cheery.
We had originally booked in for 3 nights but it was so lovely we stayed for 2 more.

The first three nights we were in the suite and they are well worth the extra money as they enjoy great views and are extremely well equipped and fitted out to a very high standard.
The standard rooms are well equipped, have all the usual tea coffee etc & mini fridge. There is also complimentary ice available in a fridge on most floors, which was a nice touch.
The buffet restaurant is well placed with views across the bay, the evening food is of a very good standard with plenty of choices and well worth the cost.
We didn’t try the buffet breakfast as we felt it was a little expensive when you could get a breakfast in the town much cheaper. But my other half did take a look at the spread on offer one morning and he said it looked very good.
The bar is next to the restaurant and opens at 3pm (a shame it didn’t open earlier especially during the summer months at lunchtime as we would have been happy to use it )
The bar offers a happy hour from 5.30 - 6.30 and was very reasonably priced for a hotel.
There is a beautiful swimming pool to the front of the hotel and pool towels provided. The gardens surrounding the pool were gorgeous and maintained beautifully. There was plenty of seating, loungers, tables and umbrellas etc.
There is a private spa pool which you can hire free for 30 min slots. The changing rooms were always clean with fresh towels. There was also a table tennis, and ice hockey table available free.
The hotel offers free bikes for hire for residents which was also a nice touch and something we took advantage of.
A very good hotel that I cant wait to go back too.
