“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2007

Having travelled from the UK (no stopovers) we were looking for somewhere quiet and relaxed to chill out for a few days and recover from the journey & adjust to the time difference. Cooks Lookout was perfect for this. Excellent facilities, clean & comfortable rooms, a view over the bay to die for (we were in room 3 at the top of the site) and a deafening quiet - the only sounds were birds and crickets, no traffic noise at all. Norm & Shelagh were most welcoming (a UK couple originally from Merseyside who have worked very hard on the property) and helped us in deciding where to visit in the area. The motel is located 4-5 kms from Paihia so it is necessary to drive to restaurants in the resort centre (we would recommend La Scala). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we were well rested as we embarked on our 5-week itinerary of New Zealand.

We visited in February, the rooms were spacious, clean and tidy. We were in one of the two bedroom units with the most beautiful panoramic view over the Bay. The rooms were furnished to a high standard. What made it really special for us was Norm and Shelagh's welcome and support .

There really needs to be a picture of this motel (I will put some of mine on) as it really is special.
We stayed in motel unit 3, the one on the web site with the view from the bed. Top of the hill...
[--]
It was fabulous. There was just me and hubby for 3 nights and to sit out (although then you are overlooked by the unit just behind...but when they were out that was ok..both units share a deck) on the deck and watch the bay was pretty special.

The view down is of waitangi, and parts of piahia although the motel is 4 kms to the town ..3 kms to the beach. You can not walk..you have to drive down if you want to swim etc. You are about 2 mins from Hururu falls (which are really just some rapids) and 5 mins to piahia

HOWEVER because of that, you dont hear any traffic noise...just cicardas and birds and you have the best view in the world from your bed (which is not in anyway overlooked!)

There is a woolworths in paihia and a petrol station etc so buying supplies is easy. We took the boat over to russell and looked up at kerikeri (going to live there!)
Hubby went on a kings bus to cape rianga for the day and I spent it in the motel pool which was great. A lot of older people staying (ie no teenagers and 18-30 yr olds) very quiet...just right!
the odd child..trampoline area is nice next to the pool and bbq, would make a great family base.

didnt use the spa.
weather was nice (13th jan) 25 deg and cloud to keep the sun from stinging your skin.
It was one of the nicest places in the north island I have been too and will be back to stay at the cooks as that has the best view in the world!!
Piahia reminded me of northern italy, southern france..you expected people to speak in a foreign language. The view is like those islands off the italian coast..not as big as the marlborough sounds, but very similar. The beach is not sydney, but nice...browny sand and russell is stone.(russell is like akaroa)

Good place to go and chill while still BEING in NZ.
The weather really helps esp if you are from Christchurch. It was nice to feel warm all the time.
Thinking of immigrating up there..as hubby is a teacher. watch this space..watch out Norm, I am coming to work for you.

I did enjoy my stay there very much...had a beautiful view from the deck of the Bay of Islands. Norm and his wife couldn't be nicer. My only complaint was that our room meant for two was barely big enough for one. If you opened your suitcase in the room, you couldn't move. There was practically no place to put your clothes. We were mortified when we arrived and found that there were no screens on the sliding doors or windows.....turns out they aren't needed. All in all, a good trip. If you want to see the best view of the bay, go parasailing on the Flying Kiwi.

This nice American couple’s accommodation was booked for them in advance by their son, who lives locally and operates the Flying Kiwi Parasail operation mentioned in the review. After coming to see our rooms he opted for the Studio rather than a more spacious, but slightly more expensive, One Bedroom Apartment.

His parents arrived from America with the large U.S. luggage allowance and stayed with us for a week, so we can understand that they might have enjoyed more space. We would have dealt with this problem at the time had we known about it! We wish guests would let us know if they have a problem while they are here, as we are happy to do everything, within reason, to help them to get the maximum enjoyment from their stay, but we cannot fix these things after they have left.

Incidentally, we have now improved the clothes-hanging space in all of our Studio Units.

We had a lovely 2-bedroom suite with a huge wood deck and a great view over the Bay of Islands. This unit was completely remodeled and redecorated in 2005 and had a well-equipped kitchen with brand new cooktop and fridge.

Norm and Shelagh worked overtime to give restaurant recommendations, sightseeing routes and boat reservations. While I agree that the spa was unusable, we thoroughly enjoyed the sparkling clean pool and had it all to ourselves. There are only 10 units in this motel on top of the hill in a residential area, so it is absolutely quiet and only a short drive to Pahia or Haruru Falls or the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Be sure to have Norm give you directions to the spectacular viewpoint at Mount Bledisloe. You will probably be the only ones there!

Nice views that is all I can say about this place...very overpriced...$130 a night for basic room.
Pool and spa was unuseable.
