“The best in the North Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

In our two week tour from Wellington to Auckland, Cook's Lookout was without doubt the best accommodation we stayed both in comfort and value for money.

The furnishings were of a very high quality and standard and it was fully and well equipped with everything we might need for a three night stay.

The proprietor had a good knowledge of the area and was most helpful in offering us advice to make the best of our time there.

The view - do not believe what you read or see in photographs - you MUST go and see it for yourself! It changes as you look at it and is a pleasure from the sunrise that comes through the bedroom window throughout the day. So relaxing you just want to sit there all day looking at it!

We run Ferness Cottage a B&B at Loch Ness in Scotland and fully appreciate the hard work that goes into a business such as Cook's Lookout.

Room Tip: We were at the top of the hill overlooking the bay but we thing all the rooms have a view.

We stayed for 2 nights during May 2013, having booked because of the view. Any photographers out there will be thrilled to stay here - the expansive views across the bay are unlike anything we have found during our many travels. We were lucky to wake to find the moon shining directly over the most picturesque part of the scene, but only just missed a complete double rainbow!
The rooms are spacious with a very private balcony.
A special mention to Norm who made certain we didn't miss anything special to photograph, told us of some other amazing viewpoints on our return journey, and made us laugh with his little 'extra' in the garden opposite the reception building ( now you have to visit to see what it is).

Room Tip: The layout is such that almost all rooms have these views - only a few face away from the bay.

My husband and I stayed here April 23-25th and had a fantastic time. Our view from the room is as stunning as the photos show and the little deck was great for sitting out on enjoying the sunset and the view over the bay as the sun comes up is amazing!
The room was clean and comfortable with a little eating area, kitchen basics and a spacious bathroom with a shower stall cap that reduces humidity in the room and effectively creates a steam shower. We saw no problems with the quality of the bedding, no bugs to speak of, and with the 3 local resident cats I cannot imagine there would be a mouse problem- these comments are directed towards a very negative posting from a few weeks ago- some people just like to be miserable and complain but truly in this little spot of paradise I find it hard to see how you could NOT enjoy your time here. The hotel is located away from the busy mainstrip of Pahia which for us was perfect as we prefer some peace and quiet, and the views are spectacular.
Our hosts Norm and Shelagh were very helpful with providing tips on things to see, helping us to book a boat tour for the Hole in the Rock and dolphin tour, including pick up and drop off from our hotel. They provided helpful maps of the areas we were interested in seeing and we thoroughly enjoyed eating at the restaurants they had recommended. We had great steaks at Lips cafe, fish and chips at Shippeys and ribs at Jimmy Jacks- all great meals and my personal favorite item to recommend trying is a chocolate ice cream from Movenpick...this may simply be the best chocolate ice cream ever made!
Norm highly recommended the Kuari Museum as a stop on our drive back to Auckland and this was amazing- well worth the $25 price of admission and we wished we had left more time to spend there-we had 2 hours and stayed right until close but 3 hours probably would have been better- the drive through the Kuari forests are beautiful but very curvy and takes longer then you think to do the drive and stop and see the trees as well.
The reception area had a selection of books, games and movies which as we had fantastic weather we did not use and the convenience of having a little grocery store just a few minutes away made picking up breakfast items very easy. The weather was a little cool so we did not try the pool and there were laundry facilities as well that we did not use but other guests were enjoying.
Overall we had a fantastic time here and would return the next time we visit New Zealand.

Thanks to Norm and Shelagh for 4 beautiful, peaceful nights! Love being just a bit out of town.
We had a wonderful view to the Bay of Islands. Grateful for the jigsaw puzzles and movies to keep us amused during the wet, yucky day.
Special props to Norm for suggesting the Kauri Museum halfway back to Auckland. It was very interesting. One of the best museums of our trip!

We had 4 nights here at the end of a month travelling around both islands. The views are spectacular and the short drive down to town is no biggie for views like we had. Norm and shelagh are wonderful people, very helpful with advice on what to do, booked our trips, drove us to town for one of them and when we hadn't shown up at the allotted tine, norm drove down t o try and find us! Our 2bedroom room with kitchen was very comfortable, clean and suited us perfectly. We were not expecting mod cons, we were expecting comfort and a view and we were not disappointed. I highly recommend norm and shelagh's cook's lookout.

We'd booked via email almost a year in advance. As Norm and Sheila had moved office since they'd mislaid our booking - but very quickly rectified things and put us in a lovely unit. The view was fantastic, the unit well equipped, clean and spacious. Norm and Sheila offered us advice on where to go/what to see and where to eat out - all much appreciated. They even remembered to email us to ask us to submit a review when we got home! Well recommended if you've got transport (as too far from the main Pahia town to walk to shops/restaurants etc.
