“A great introduction to the Bay of Islands!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

My family and I stayed at Cooks Lookout for four nights in early January. We had a two bedroom chalet which was spacious, comfortable and clean. There was lots to do in the area to keep us busy: hiking (tramping), beach, tour of the northlands area, and our highlight - a days sailing on the Bay of Islands. Norm and shellagh pointed us to some good restaurants nearby. However a good book and a glass of wine on the chalet deck in the evening while watching the stunning view of the Bay below really made us feel that our holidays had begun!

We stayed two nights in a two bedded apartment. Apartment clean but basic - definitely could do with a makeover! Lovely views of bay and a nice decking area outside. Swimming pool excellent, again overlooking the bay. The main problem we felt was that it is a 5 min drive on a very windy road into
town so someone has to drive home after a night out as too far to walk. Owners helpful and approachable with tips and places to visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a rooom with a view of the bay

Our first visit out of Auckland was to the Cook's lookout Motel. The best thing about the hotel is the amazing view, the deck and the location. It is truly a look out. Enjoyed the stay and the company.

Room Tip: If traveling with 4 women perhaps two rooms and not the suite would have worked better. One bathroo...

We booked unit #9, a spacious 2-br ground-floor unit with a beautiful view out to the Wairangi Reserve and Russell beyond. The unit was very well equipped with all the necessities for cooking, good towels, comfortable beds, etc. The laundry was convenient and at $2 per load, reasonably priced. The Internet was also good and the amount provided free was generous. Norm and Shelagh are gracious, friendly hosts. We really enjoyed our 3-night stay, and particularly enjoyed the day- long Dune Rider trip to Cpe Reinga they arranged for us.

Enjoyed 5 nights late January 2013. Wonderful harbour views from our apartment, excellent help from Norm and Shelagh in planning our outings and a refreshing swim every day in the well kept pool with view. The apartment was very spacious, clean and comfortable. Good location to see the sights, close to Pahia but away from the bustle. Appreciated the books and DVDs to borrow.
A relaxing and enjoyable break!

This place is quiet, very clean and the views are nice but the property was disappointing given all the very high ratings on this site. It is a motel , a well kept one, but still nothing more. The room was basic, the beds were reasonably comfortable but springy, and the bathroom also very clean. The kitchen area was useful and appliances were up to date and worked well. Norm was helpful and friendly. It's a decent place but can't figure out what all the rave reviews are about.

We thank the reviewer for confirming what Cook’s Lookout MOTEL is all about i.e. “It is a quiet, well kept Motel with clean, basic rooms and a very clean bathroom, a useful kitchen area with up to date appliances and helpful, friendly management plus nice views”

We have never pretended to be anything more than that and can only guess that the many people who have written such rave reviews about us perhaps do not often stay in Hotels etc. which charge 2-3 times what we do for 2 person accommodation and therefore their expectations for a “moderately popular” MOTEL like ours are not too high.

Our motto, as published on our website, is – “We’ll NEVER be 5 STAR – but we’ll ALWAYS be SPECIAL” Happily most of our guests seem to believe that this is true.

We stayed with Norm amd Shelagh for 3 nights early Jan 2013, and our hosts were fantastic. They gave us great advice on what to do and see and were just wonderful, down to earth people. The views from our room (apartment # 3) at the top of the driveway) were just as other reviewers have posted on this site....exceptional. The location is very quiet and only a 3 minute drive to Paihia (yes, we timed it!) We went in the peak season so Paihia was extremely busy and noisy but where we were was peaceful. The apartments have everything you need, a comfy bed, constant hot water and views you cannot tire of. If you want a relaxing holiday you really need to spend a few nights with Norm and Shelagh.

Room Tip: The three apartments at the top of the driveway have best views.
