“Out of town but worth the drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2014

Secluded, quiet, private on hillside - hosts couldn't be more helpful - we booked one of the large rooms and were amazed at it's spaciousness - spotlessly clean and well-appointed - the made to order breakfast was wonderful - it's a bit out of town and not easy to find, but worth the trouble - we traveled for a month in NZ and this was one of the best accommodations we experienced - John and Mike are great!

Room Tip: Go for "queen" or "king" room - a really nice place to stay

Hi Allen thank you for your review. We were so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us at Longhouse. It is just a shame you weren't with us for longer. So pleased you were happy with the room and it being so spacious. A lot of guests are surprised at the size of the rooms on their arrival. John prides himself on his breakfasts so pleased you thought it was wonderful. Once again thanks for taking the time to write this review and we look forward to welcoming you back to Longhouse if you are back in this part of the world.

I stayed at the Longhouse for three nights.
Just being on the outskirts of Paihia,it gives you the time to re-charge your batteries while touring Newzealand. But not to far from the centre of things if that's what you want.
John and Mike where brilliant hosts they made me feel part of the family from the start.
They are full of information on things to do and see.
The breakfast was yummy John's homemade muesli and muffins where lush.
One night all of the guests stayed in for dinner alfresco on the deck area.John's homemade "Longhouse" pate was beautiful as was the Beef stroganoff and cheesecake. The wine flowed what a brilliant night we had and a great way to meet other people.John is a fantastic chef.
I can honestly say I was sad to leave I would highly recommend you to visit John and Mike at Longhouse.
Thank you guys for a great visit.I'll be back some day.xxxx

Hi Denise and thank you for your review. It was fantastic having you here. We like to make our home our guests home while they are here and of course that leads on to being part of the family. So good you enjoyed the meal we provided to our guests that night. It was a lovely evening out on the deck and great conversation. We were both sad to see you go as we had some really good laughs while you were here. It was also a bonus that we could celebrate a birthday while you were here. Once again thanks for your review and we look forward to having you back again. Hope all is well in the UK and you are starting to dry out.

The service that I received at this B&B and the friendly easy going attitude of its owners is the best I have received in all of Oceania. The owners really went out of their way to make me feel welcomed and to address my every need. Breakfast was superb, and the location of this property is fantastic (close enough to the town, but away from all the noise and tourists, with a nice view to the bushland).

Pros: Service, Location, Warm friendly attitude of owners, and how they went out of their way to address my needs.

Cons: Room has no airconditionig (electric fan is available). Bed is very, very soft. While some may love that, others like myself need a semi-firm bed.

Location: Bed & Breakfast is on a private quiet street in a secluded and very nice private street that overlooks bushland. Only 2 minutes away from town's main street; so you get the best of two worlds (quiet environment to sleep and relax, and being really close to all the restaurants, stores, etc.).

Hi Paul and thank you for your review. We really enjoyed looking after you while you were in the Bay Of Islands. Sorry the bed was a bit too soft for you but had you made comment we do have another mattress that we could have offered you whilst you were here. Once again thank you for your review and hopefully we will see you back in this part of the world again

We enjoyed our 3-days stay in Paihia, the start of a 4-weeks New Zealand trip, very much which is in great parts owed to our charming hosts John and Mike. They were very supportive with recommending and booking trips around Paihia and advising on further travel plans. Our room was big, comfortable, nicely decorated and had a nice terrasse overlooking the woods. The breakfast John served was lovingly prepared and delicious with a range of fruits, cereal and freshly cooked egg dishes. The B&B is a few minutes drive from the village, so it comes very handy that they also offer dinner which we enjoyed very much, including interesting dinner conversation with our hosts.

Hi Gini and thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. It was lovely having you stay with us and yes we did have great conversations over the dinners you had with us. We thoroughly enjoyed finding out about Austria and in return giving you information about Paihia and the Bay of Islands, I am sure the rest of your trip around New Zealand was also fantastic. So much so that we hope that one day you will return to our shores. Once again thank you for your review and hope to see you again at Longhouse Bed and Breakfast.

POSITIVES

 An amazing location, on a hill with a view of the bush. There is parking immediately outside. Worth getting the latitude and longitude off Google Earth for your satnav – the turn is a little hard to find – there is a street sign.
 The property is very quiet with just occasional noise as a car passes – but I slept with all the windows open and wasn’t disturbed.
 I received a warm welcome and plenty of information: particularly about local restaurants.
 The breakfast was large and fresh with plenty of choice and a main course cooked (very well) to order.
 My room was large, modern and stylish. I had a well equipped and modern bathroom. There was a kitchen area with kettle and fridge. There was a flat-screen TV with satellite link.
 Wifi was included and was fast.
 There was a large deck outside and it was made clear that I was welcome to use it and the large sitting and dining area in the house.
 I felt like a guest and was even offered wine (but I don’t drink)

NEGATIVES

 You need a car – it is about 10 minutes drive from town: otherwise no negatives.

CONCLUSION

A great place to stay. My only problem was that I had arranged a packed schedule and could only stay one night. This B&B and the town deserve more than one night.

Room Tip: Either room will be excellent

Joe thanks for your review. It is a shame you only had the one night here as the Bay Of Islands has got such a lot to offer. We understand about the tight schedule but hopefully this means that you will be back at some point and visit the Bay Of Islands once again. So pleased you felt so comfortable in our Queen Room and enjoyed the Breakfast prepared for you.
Once again thank you and we hope that you will visit again soon.

A brilliant BnB! Set in a semi-rural location near Haruru Falls, it is removed from the hustle and bustle of nearby Pahia. Surrounded by Manuka trees, it is very secluded which means that relaxing on the large deck is a most pleasant way to enjoy any time of the day.
We stayed 3 nights with our overseas guests and the only way I can describe our stay is to say it was outstanding. Our friends are not used to BnB's but loved Longhouse. John was great and most helpful.
We loved the breakfasts-brilliant food and superb table settings (Royal Albert china no less!). Our friends were amazed.
We elected to have a dinner on the first night, prepared by John, who has Chef qualifications. Excellent! Our friends, used to fine dining, insisted that we have a meal at Longhouse every night of our stay, which we did.
Initially we had intended to stay only two nights but one of our friends became unwell. He was more than happy to stay another night-as were we. John was great and looked after our friend and offered advice re medical treatment etc which was most helpful.
And the rooms-huge, extremely comfortable-all you could ask for.
If you can find a better BnB in this area-you will be very lucky. We have no complaints whatsoever. Thanks John-we will be back.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Queen room, which was superb. Our friends stayed in the King room, which was huge b...

Paul . What can I say.
What a wonderful review. It was an absolute delight looking after you. It felt like I had known you as friends for years. It was so relaxed looking after all four of you.
So pleased that the dinner experience was to your liking and it is so good to hear that your friends thought so also. What a lovely couple. It was sad that your friend became unwell but we were also really pleased to hear that he had recovered enough and was able to continue on with the rest of the journey.
Once again Paul thanks so much for the review and if you are speaking to your friends please pass on our best wishes and look forward to seeing you again at Longhouse.

My husband and I stayed with John and Mike for the long weekend and we felt right at home.

We booked the Queen room and I loved the feel of it with all the personal touches and the books on the shelves. It reminded me of staying with family rather than in a characterless motel-room. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows even better than what I have at home so that was a real treat. The room and en-suite was very clean and the shower was fantastic. I had forgotten to pack stuff like shampoo and body lotion so I was very pleased to find those things in the bathroom, which were actually very nice and not standard motel stuff.

The breakfast was delicious and we ate out on the big decked area on a sunny morning. John prepared this meal at our request and it really set us up for the day. The Queen room also has its own little balcony and it was great to sit out there with a glass of wine and enjoy the sunset.

The B&B is located a short drive from the main street of Paihia, which suited us better as we don’t like to be right in the midst of things, and they are so close to Haruru Falls as well. The property is surrounded by tall trees so you really feel like you’re in a secluded spot with all the benefits of the town nearby.

It was a truly fabulous way to celebrate our anniversary and John and Mike really made it special for us. We will definitely stay with them at Longhouse again.

Room Tip: Queen Room has more privacy with its own entrance and little balcony as it is on the other end of th...
