“clean,comfortable and great position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

We travel to NZ regularly and often access the YHA network. We found this hostel to be everything we needed.Kitchen was regularly cleaned and occupants were co-operative in the use of facilities. Some swap recipes or goods. The hostel has a spice rack which is useful and there is a countdown supermarket nearby where you can purchase reasonably priced food.We would recommend the NZ fish.
Hostel staff were friendly and helpful and the place nice and quiet. We met some interesting fellow travellers. This hostel, like others has a range of ages.
Would recommend the ferry trip($12 return) to Russell and lunch at the waterfront Marlborough pub.We had the best meal in NZ here and well priced, friendly staff.Would also recommend a visit to the treaty grounds ($25) but they let you return the next day for another visit in this price. The grounds are beautiful!!! Finally, we took the overnight YHA Rock boat cruise. This 22 hours on the water made us really experience the beautiful Bay of Islands.

Room Tip: All hostel rooms have ensuites.

This is my first time staying at a YHA and I was very impressed. I will stay at more and I suggest becoming a member for future discounts at other YHAs. This place was very clean, safe and comfortable. The kitchen is very organized and clean and you look forward to making yourself a meal. The lounge feels like my living room, inviting to watch TV or check your email. The outside patios feel like my back yard. I stayed in a dorm room with 6 other beds, very inviting and comfortable and we even had a space heater to warm the room up a bit. Cleaniest Bathrooms I have seen in a hostel in a while.

Room Tip: The female dorm room with 8 beds is big and a bathroom. Don't need to spend extra money for a sm...

Rooms small but very clean and comfortable with ensuite. I found the staff friendly and helpful, especially Milo. Kitchen very well equipped nice touch having the packet herbs and spices provided. Lovely communal area where I meet some lovely overseas visitors.

The man working in the hostel was beyond rude.. He was very bothered by doing his job! Other than that the hostel was nice.. Would stay at any other place just because of the hostile staff!

This is a nice clean hostel and even though it was fully booked it wasn't too noisy and all rooms come with a private bathroom. The kitchen got a bit crowded at peak times but there's always plenty of space to sit and wait. What we didn't like: I thought the room was overpriced at almost NZD 100 a night. Also you get kicked out of the TV/computer room just after 11 PM, which might be good for safety reasons, but not so nice if you want to chat online to your family abroad or just watch some telly late at night. Wireless connection was really tedious as you'd move half a meter and lose your connection again (I ended up sitting in the kitchen most of the time as my provider could not be found only a few steps further out in the dining area).

The hostel itself is alright, the kitchen could be bigger, during busy times it's too crowded in there and our bathroom could have been cleaner but the reason I would not go there again is the staff. Especially the owner was towards me very unfriendly and rude. This is
absolutely not YHA-standard and I'm not paying over average for being accost!

I spent a few good nights at this hostel, which boasts a stainless steel kitchen, ample outdoor seating and comfy, squeak-free beds. It's located at the far south side of town among similar lodges about a block from the beach. The only downside is that while the bathrooms were spotless, my 8-bed dorm had but one small bathroom en suite, which could make morning showers challenging. (It also felt a bit, erm, intimately located to some of the beds). This was, however, a small compromise for an otherwise top-notch hostel.

Room Tip: Rooms are set up in a motel style - all accessible from sliding glass doors on the west side of the...
