“What a find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2008

I have been lucky enough to travel around New Zealand with work. I booked this hotel against the advice of a colleague, am I glad I did.

The Best Bits:

- Brand New
- Fresh and stylish decor
- Balcony with view of the water
- Separate spa bath and shower
- Separate Powder room
- Mini kitchenette
- Room service food "Excellent!"
- Staff service

Can't recommend this hotel highly enough.

Booked premium suite with seaviews and large balcony. Unfortunately this suite was ground floor right on corner of road. Anxious about road noise we asked for alternative. Very quickly reaccommodated us in higher floor but room significantly smaller. Not looking out to sea but not too concerned. Room fine. Clean and well equipped. Would have been happier with sofa in room as just three uncomfortable armchairs. Big clean bathroom with spa bath. When bath emptied the floor drain smell was a bit overwhelming. Had that before in other hotels - stagnant stinking water.
I probably should have researched it more but hotel well out of Napier. Took us about 30 mins to walk to town center. Lots of great bars nearby tho and took advice of previous reviewer and dined at Caution in Shed 2. Fantastic food and very (very) attentive service.
No real complaints about the Crown Hotel. All just a bit uninspiring and doesn't really set itself apart in any way.
By the way I just contacted the hotel thinking that our much smaller and less comfortable room was cheaper and was keen for a refund of difference. They very promptly called me back and said this wasn't the case. Hmmm......

We stayed here just one night on our way from Taupo to Martinborough. Check-in was a bit disappointing in that our room was not ready (OK, it was 2:45pm and check-in was at 3:00pm, but still). They offered us a free drink in the small bar, but we decided to go into Napier (the Crown Hotel is just north of Napier, but its walkable). When we came back to check-in the room was ready, but now we were just offered a 2 for 1 drink. Hmm, kinda cheap. Then, when we went down to have the drink, they told us the bar was closed for a private function for an hour. Nice.

The room itself (Heritage Suite - the one in their pictures) was very nicely appointed, with a large bath with a spa tub and separate shower, and a very comfy bed. Unfortunately the view was just of the back street. The modern suites in the new building have the views.

Overall it was a decent place for the night, but we found it was a bit pricey for what you get - which is basically a nice room. Since the West Quay is so close, we walked over to Caution for dinner and it was AMAZING. So, maybe it was OK that we stayed here and not direcly in Napier.

It pains me to rate a hotel lower than I would like to, unfortunately this hotel did not meet my expectations at the price point. I booked a premium 2 bedroom suite, price range is $440-$660 per night, a rate that did not include breakfast. As far as I could tell this differs from the standard suite, in that the standard has 1 less en-suite, no wash machine/dryer and perhaps a little smaller. The hotel was air-conditioned (quiet) in the main hall (not ducted to the bedrooms). The hotel has only 2 of these rooms situated at the top floor and facing the sea. The larger room with ensuite comes with bathroom (nearly as large as the bedroom) and a bath/spa combination. The other room has an ensuite with a shower. Both equipped with the usual towels, amenities (shampoo, conditioner, soap) and thick bathrobes. Also has fully equipped kitchen with mini bar. It was kept very clean and the hotel is very new. The first thing that struck me was how tiny the LCD TV was (only about 20"), perhaps having rented an apartment at Taupo the night before for about the same price with a 42" LCD TV made it seem smaller.

The rooms are reasonably well insulated from road noise which is between the hotel and the sea. However this peace was broken in the morning when construction/demolition began next door. I asked if another room was available but they said only the standard rooms were available (with no mention of any refunds). I booked directly from the hotel website which promised free wine or something. I did not get this nor did I bother to ask for any. The website displays pictures from 3 sides but not the side where all the construction is happening, nor did it mention anything about the possibility that your stay may be less than peaceful. I will leave it up to you as to what you think of this omission. In the past, my stay at quality resorts were heavily discounted if the presence of construction would even remotely affect the tranquility. Attached are pictures showing the construction side which they have left out.

There are undercover parks available but they are not enough for all the rooms and are not allocated either. So don't expect any premium rates you pay to guarantee a covered park, as they are on a first come first served basis.

I normally use hotel gyms, but this tiny one only had a rower, exercycle and some weights, it was quite sad looking and I did not bother.

Overall, it is a clean tidy and new hotel, but in my opinion falls far short of "luxury". The standard is only of a good business quality motel certainly not a luxury hotel. The morning breakfast staff was helpful and friendly.

I would not be staying here again for the price.

  • Liked — New, clean.
  • Disliked — Construction & demolition noise from next door. Sad looking gym.

We really enjoyed our night here. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment in the new section of the building. It felt like we were the first ones to ever stay in this room. Everything was very modern and clean. Huge bathroom with a spa bath and seperate shower. The lounge folded out to another bed and the balcony had water views. Although this hotel is a little out of town, past the port, it is still a nice location with a few places to eat. There was no laundry facilities in the room but the hotel does have a washing room with very modern applicances and washing powder all free of charge. Internet access available, LCD TV and stainless steal appliances and dishwasher make it all very attractive. Everything was very nicely done at this hotel, we would definatly stay here again.

We ate at Deanos for dinner (walking distance) which we were not to fussed on, the steaks were pretty tasteless and despite less than 10 people in the restrauant, service was a bit slim.

We also went to the aquarium on the main drag in Napier and found it very disappointing and quite small.

We stayed here for one night when staying in the Hawkes' bay / Napier area. We had one of the heritage suites and found the accommodation to be modern, stylish and very convenient for our needs. The staff was very friendly, the room and bathroom were clean and overall we were very impressed and would stay here again.

The hotel is within walking distance to a couple of restaurants and bars in Port Ahuriri and these were very lively as we were there during a weekend night. However, in order to get to Napier itself you will need to drive, but it is a straightforward drive and the art deco buildings are absolutely beautiful. In fact, Napier was probably one of our favourite towns in all of NZ!
