Fantastic Vicar. A beautiful Cathedral built after the 1931 Earthquake. Organ has just been restored & refurbished & is magnificent to listen to. No restriction to who visits, all are welcome

“Well worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

Destroyed in the 1931 earthquake & slowly rebuilt with lovely stained glass windows, the Waiapu Cathedral is well worth a visit. Also has a gallery of historic photos & a wonderful organ.

I've been a frequent visitor to Waiapu Cathedral and this special weekend was no exception. Good atmosphere and very well appointed.

“RISEN FROM THE ASHES”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

The first Cathedral was totally destroyed by the Napier earthquake. Construction of the current Cathedral started in 1955 and took 10 years to complete. It is an interesting example of modern architecture and bears some comparison to Coventry Cathedral in the UK that was also destroyed within a decade of Napier and rebuilt around the same time. A silver cross made of nails from Coventry is displayed. There are some fine modern stained glass windows. A visit provides an interesting contrast with Napier’s art deco traditions.
