My fiancee and I stayed in the Semillion room which opened up onto the varandah, which was very clean, spacious, quiet and peaceful and a stones throw away from wineries.
Lovely place, great views, the host were friendly and couldn't say enough about the breakfast!! Also enjoyed a local bottle of wine and some cheese with our host in the evening.
Would recommend and stay there again at drop of a hat.

we stayed in the esk valley lodge as part of our 40th wedding anniversary trip to new zealand. We were not disapointed. The situation was great, away from the road ,quiet and surrounded by vineyards and gardens.
The hosts we very good, generous with their information on the area and offering advice on where to go etc. The breakfasts were excellent with some home made produce and the food platter should you choose to eat in at night was extensive The suite we sayed in was large and airy with a balcony overlooking the gardens and vineyards. It also had the bonus of aircon which was great.
If you are travelling to the Napier area we would definately advise you to stay. One of the best if not THE best B &B we stayed in

One of the nicest BnB's we have ever stayed in. Fantastic country and vineyard views and the hosts were outstanding. We were there in spring and the owner took us through the vineyard and explained what was happening to the grapes at that time. This made the wine (and cheese) we had with them and the other guests before dinner all the more interesting. A great breakfast with some bacon from the nearby home farmed pig! And we mustn't forget Roxy, the dog, a big softy who made us feel at home.

We stayed here for two night in January 2008 and loved it. We had the Sauvignon Suite which was huge, very well decorated and extremely comfortable. The best bit is the balcony with the view over the garden and vineyards. It's a really peaceful retreat even though it is a short drive to Napier. Very welcoming hosts too.

This was one of our favorite places we stayed in New Zealand. We stayed here for two nights in June. What a gorgeous location! Set back from a main road, it overlooks a vineyard where sheep roam. With only two rooms available for guests, this is a small, quiet property. The couple who owns the lodge have put a lot of detail into making the property comfortable. Their dog met us on arrival (there is a cat is as well). The downstairs has a living room with free internet access for all guests, along with the breakfast table. Upstairs are two large rooms, named after types of wine. We stayed in the suite, which had a large bathroom, sitting room, and bedroom. The bathroom only had a shower (no tub) and included a towel warmer. The sitting room had a couch, tv with dvd player and movies, mini fridge, tea, and fresh water. We had three in our party, so an extra bed was added to this room. The bedroom had a very comfortable bed, extra sink, fresh fruit and chocolate, and a balcony with a small table that overlooks the vineyard (amazing view to wake up to in the morning). Everything was simple, elegant, and immaculate. A breakfast menu was left in the room, which included 6-8 selections made of fresh, local ingredients.
Our hosts were kind and gracious. On the first evening, we sat downstairs taking for about an hour while enjoying "nibbles" and a glass of local wine. They recommended a restaurant in Napier (Pacifica, which was excellent), and also called to be sure that they not only had a table available, but also had a vegetarian option on their menu. The next day, they also called a company that provides winery tours to set up a tour for us. Upon our departure, they added our names to a bottle of wine in their collection, for us to enjoy when we return to the lodge.
We loved the Esk Valley Lodge and would recommend it to anyone visiting the Hawke's Bay area. I should point out that the lodge is not located in the heart of Napier; it is about a 10-15 minutes drive north of Napier. For us, this wasn't a problem, but if you want to be right near the heart of the shops and restaurants, you may want to look elsewhere. But for a quite escape in the heart of wine country, this is an ideal place to stay.
