“Simply Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2007

This is a beautiful old colonial style property lovingly cared for by owners David and Jan.The rooms are presented to the highest standards and the abundant roses in the garden were in full bloom during our visit. The full size palm tree in our bedroom also took our fancy. There are stunning views over the bay from this elevated site and pleasant walks nearby in the wonderful Botanical Gardens and lovely old Cemetry just round the corner. David and Jan are the perfect hosts. They are trained for the job ,have bags of experience --and it shows.Nothing is too much trouble-a plate of freshly picked strawberries whilst we relaxed round the pool(David made the rest into home-made jam), a lift in the evening to the vineyard restaurant recommended and booked by them etc etc.The food is faultless plus an excellent wine list. However it is the hosts who make this the quality experience it is.They deliver the highest quality product and service with great good humour.-an unqualified recommendation

My wife and I have recently returned from a amazing trip to New Zealand and were lucky enough to have top and tailed our holiday at the beautiful McHardy house.
The house is gorgeous, and Napier is glorious, but what really made our stay were the utterly fun and fantastic David and Jan, who were our gracious hosts.
When we return to New Zealand in the future we will definately be making McHardy house an essential item on our list of places to revisit.

Spent 3 nights at the McHardy house in March 2007 as part of a 3 week trip around New Zealand. The house is beautiful and David and Jan were the perfect hosts. Sadly we did not get to sample dinner but if the breakfasts were anything to go by then we certainly missed out. It is a great place to relax where nothing was too much trouble and we felt very welcome. Would thoroughly recommend a few nights at McHardy !

This is an excellent B&B in a lovely old, large home, with top-notch proprieters. We had the very appealing Alexandria "suite", which is a tastefully decorated room with a sitting area and a non-private verandah. No view.
Hosts David and Jan are completely firiendly and helpful; they made our visit a real pleasure. The place was hard to find the first time but fine after that. Only a couple minutes to downtown Napier, an attractive Art Deco small city.
Breakfasts were a bit repetitive but excellent. Jan will do laundry at $25 per load and will supply you an iron for you to finish. Free internet access on their computer. For a B&B, this is expensive but well worth the tariff.

My wife and I drove into Napier after a week's trout fishing near Taupo. We stayed only one night, but would recommend McHardy House and hosts Jan and David Rayner without hesitation. It is a beautiful and comfortable boutique hostel, and the Rayners are true professionals. Plus, and this is the real payoff, if you let your hair down and share confidences, they are outrageous fun. Go and you'll see! -- Ross and Mac Francis, New York City

We booked McHardy House as the place to stay to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of our party and we could not have found anything better. From the moment we arrived until we left, it was a truly excellent experience. Jan and David have a beautiful home with superb rooms and superb food. Our only disappointment - our schedule only allowed us one night's stay!
