“Business with a presence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

Spent 2 nights at the County after picking it out through its website. All business, no sightseeing, but if you're going to have to spend all day inside talking, negotiating, planning, etc, this is the place to do it. Management couldn't have been more helpful in providing a quite atmosphere in the library, and threw in a whiteboard for free. Particularly impressed with free web access throughout the hotel. Room was large and airy, bathrooms exceptionally clean. Churchill Bar is interesting concept, and restaurant food was first class.

The location for being central in downtown Napier was perfect. The hotel had beautiful old decor reflected of its origin and the general feel and comfort of the place was good. Rooms appeared to have been renovated in the bathroom department and although functional lacked some good design elements which made routine activities not a positive experience. Couple that with the price which was very high, leads me to only rate it as average. Trading on its location and appearance!

Room Tip: Get one with a balcony

Me and my husband stayed 3 nights at the County Hotel in Napier for our wedding anniversary and we absolutely loved it. We were very impressed by the restaurant called "Wine Street" which has a very chic and stylish decoration, all about wine! We had dinner at the restaurant twice and apart from great food they recommend wine matches to each dish which is fantastic. We stayed in Whio which was a lovely room on the first floor, very quiet and spotless clean. We wanted to treat ourselves to something special and we are more than pleased and positively impressed by the choice we made - great value for money! Thank you to the friendly and professional staff and the exceptional service. We will be back soon - definitely for dinner!

Had 2 brilliant days at this hotel. Loved everything about it. The rooms and facilities were excellent and so different in style to the regular Hotel. Service was very friendly and efficient, Well situated and had parking across the road. If you want to stay in an old style hotel then this is perfect. There is a library with port and glasses. When my wife and I returned from our dinner out the decanter had been nearly drained from full. Guests obviously enjoyed a tipple.

Room Tip: We had a spa room in a bathroom that was huge.

I only stayed here because of the price offered through booking.com. Physically it is an appealing building predating the earthquake, it has an excellent restaurant and bar and there are a couple of nice little touches - the library and the decanter of port on the first floor. The rooms are comfortable, of a decent size and dark and quiet thanks to double glazed windows. It is in a handy location as well. Some of the fittings may fall a little short of five star but I enjoyed my stay here.

Thank you so much for taking the time to go onto this site, and assist others in their decision making process. We agree with you and know that we are not the Savoy in London, however we do our best for a small hotel in Napier.
Thank you again,
Christopher

I have just returned from a driving holiday in New Zealand with my wife and friends. We had one night in Napier and stayed at the County Hotel. We were welcomed by Lisa who showed us to our rooms. She was very pleasant, knew all about the Hotel and made us feel welcome. The decor of the hotel was in keeping with the Edwardian style of the building. It felt warm and comfortable. I loved the Library and could have wiled away a few hours if not attracted by the delightful architecture of Napier. The weather was glorious and it would have have been a fine room to use if wet.
We had a very good room. The air conditioning worked very well on a hot day so slept smoothly in a comfy bed. Drinks in Churchill's Bar was followed by dinner. Food and wine were both very good. Port in the Library rounded off a long day. Being close the the Art Deco Foundation it was ideally located right in the heart of the city. Breakfast in the morning was excellent. All fresh and well cooked and served in the light and airy restaurant.
All in all a very pleasant experience with excellent and friendly service. When we go next to Napier, we will be heading for the County Hotel for more than one night.

I love this hotel! Napier is known for it's art deco decor and ambience. The County Hotel offers a trip back to timeless elegance and an opportunity to pretend you are there back in the day. The staff are so friendly obviously happily employed by Chris and Angie. I will be staying there at least once a month because their service is magnificent, the rooms are opulent and the food sends me happily content to bed. I can't say enough about my stay at The County Hotel...it is truly one of my favorite places to stay. Btw...ask to stay in The Huia room! All the rooms are furnished different. The Huia you will thank me for! Xxx
