I write this review while staying at the hotel - well done on the free wi-fi!! Getting to be an essential nowadays.
I travel a lot for work, and have got sick of staying at those boring modern hotels, which always seem to be decorated the same - chocolate brown walls, darker shade of chocolate brown for the carpet, and so on. Every room the same. Dull, dull dull! I now look for variety and personality, and now prefer to stay at the wonderful variety of older hotels that NZ seems to have in abundance.
The fun thing about the Masonic is the variety. As an older hotel, it plays off its art deco design very well. Eclectic, different - a nicely old fashioned hotel that manages surprises, yet is keeping up with the times.
My wife and I are staying (at an absurdly cheap price) in the original part of the hotel - not yet affected by the sympathetic and attractive remodelling in other parts. The room is redolent with history. An old bath in an original tiled bathroom. A door opening onto the roof which catches great sunshine, and a good place to read the morning paper. Chunky brown furniture, and a washstand in the room. A room full of character, and like stepping back in time. I rather hope that they keep some rooms in the old style.
We enjoyed our visit two nights ago to the recently re-opened restaurant. A great offering of entree, small plates, pizzas and mains. The duck small plate is especially recommended. Good food, in great surroundings. The place was very busy, and deservedly so.
Although the hotel itself has many positive features, the best thing is the quality of the staff. I have been impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of every one I have met; from the restaurant manager who was remarkably pleasant, even while cleaning the restaurant men's toilet after a visit from a over-exuberant rugby fan on Saturday night, to the receptionist who quickly and pleasantly arranged a change of rooms (our first one a little noisy), to the cleaning staff who say hello in the hallways and take pride in keeping the place spotless. The hotel's greatest asset is its people.
