I just returned from a business trip to New Zealand and spent one night at the Art Deco Masonic Hotel. This hotel is ideally situated right across from the beach and also in the heart of the town with some good restaurant options nearby. It had good style from the outside and our first impression was the restaurant where we had a really good dinner. And the we tried checking in...
The front door was closed off by 2 large wooden doors and a sign saying to go around to the bar door. We dragged all of our luggage around back and into the bar where there was live music and a small group watching. We were then directed to carry our bags up the stairs and through the back door into the lobby. The lobby was a construction zone with a plain table as the checkin desk. The staff were friendly and even commented that they thought the Queen had stayed in one of our rooms.
We then got into the brown, shag-carpet-walled elevator to the first floor. The carpet on the first floor may have been original from the art deco era. We then went down the hall and had to carry our baggage down a short flight of stairs (we unfortunately had lots of luggage including travel bags, laptops and a tradeshow booth).
The room was...a bit bizarre. It had a view was onto the roof above the bar and we could hear the music until about midnight. It had been somewhat updated but they only went half way. It had new carpet (thankfully), new paint and a new bedspread but the layout included a bathroom made up of 3 small rooms - a shower room, a toilet & sink room and a 3rd tiled room with unknown purpose.
The bed was also really low to the ground which seemed kind of strange. Honestly, I was a bit worried about getting bedbugs but I feel a bit bad because they're definitely trying to update the hotel but maybe don't have the budget that they need...? Maybe they'll pull it off though.
I'm hoping that they were joking about the Queen...
