“Worst hotel we stayed at in NZ”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2007

We needed a half-way stop between Rotorua and Wellington and Napier was the obvious choice. We booked this hotel on the basis of its website ("one of the best appointed hotels in Hawkes Bay" "Luxury hotel accommodation at affordable rates"). Whaat?! The receptionist was unfriendly and unwelcoming. She tried to charge us extra for our daughter ("We always charge for a 3rd person") despite the fact I had a pre-paid voucher for 3 people!

The room would have been tired 20 years ago, smelt of damp and had mould in the bathroom. It felt like the sort of roadside motel you'd pay for by the hour.

Throughout NZ, we had nothing but good experiences in every hotel in which we stayed, apart from here. If our experience was anything to go by, I'd rather sleep in the car than stay there again.

On check-in given a comfortable room with small balcony overlooking the Central Pool.
-
This a motel type hotel with a reasonable amount of parking, also caters for the coach touring trade to a degree.
-
Hotel well located for access to the beachfront, where there is a good walkway all along the shoreline for about 2 - 3 kms. Only 5 mins walk away from town centre.
-
Hotel restaurant was closed for evening meals during our stay due to change in contractors - and also appeared the bar was also closed. Numerous restaurants available within short walking distance so no great problem. Large supermarket also nearby for in-room supplies.
-
Hotel is clean and well maintained and enthusiastic and helpful reception staff

This was the worst hotel I ever stayed at. Supposedly, it was recently bought and going through renovations, but we were put in a room that looked like it hadn't been touched in 40 years. It also smelled of mold. Unfriendly and uncaring staff. We were supposed to stay 3 nights, but immediately went to look for another hotel for the next 2 nights.

The hotel is pretty basic, but was clean and quiet. The staff was friendly and the location is great. We were worried about the pool, but it shut down early and we slept well.

Left after 2 hours. Tired rooms, sullen staff but most of all it was so noisy. I've never walked out of an hotel before! We stayed in about 15 different hotels down under and this was by far the worst.

  • Liked — noisy
  • Disliked — one very pleasant and apologetic receptionust(cancelled out by the manager)

This hotel is in a great location just a short walk from the main town centre and just opposite the beach. The rooms are a good size and clean and modern with a high quality en suite bathroom.

We only sampled the hotel's breakfast, which was a good selection and good quality. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed our stay. I would echo the warning about the car park - it is not as big as the hotel.

We stayed at the Quality Inn Napier largely due to its location.
On arriving we thought we couldn't have chosen a better spot. The hotel is located directly opposite the beach and Napier's Marineland, to the point where we could hear the seals barking in the afternoon.
The property has access on 2 road frontages. One is the beachside while the other is one of the main shopping streets in Napier. The town centre is an easy 5 minute stroll out the back entrance while the tourist information centre, where the city's famous Art Deco tours leave from, is once again a leisurely 5 minute walk.
The rooms themselves were tidy and clean. We were upgraded on arrival to a spa suite and could not fault it. The bathroom was spotless as can be seen in the photo and the room was large.
The staff were very friendly both on arrival and departure and nothing seemed a problem.
My only advise would be not to arrive too late in the day as while they have a lot of free parking they have a lot of rooms too and the night we were there the car park was completely full.
