“TARAWERA CAFE : NAPIER - TAUPO HIGHWAY”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

I've stopped often at this cafe and always been disappointed by several aspects of the surroundings and food. Very, very expensive although, in part, perhaps due to the location and the need to bring-in everything from Napier or Taupo. But, I still suspect there is no need for the unnecessarily high prices. Why is so much of the food wrapped in GladWrap [food cellophane]? It always makes me think its yesterdays food simply made to last yet another day! Set in such attractive surroundings it's such a pity the interior of the cafe is so dark and so cold. With so little effort, it doesn't have to be like that. And why do management feel it's so necessary to clean everything in such overpowering disinfectant? The odour as soon as you walk in is a negative reminder of all the occasions when I've passed through before.

“a great cafe on the way to Napier”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Had a tasty brunch in this busy but well staffed cafe. A great choice of food both from the cabinets or the blackboard menu.. Very clean and tidy establishment, a great improvement from days gone by.

“Great place to stop if you don't eat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013 via mobile

Stopped for a coffee which was nice. Wife had bacon and eggs on toast. It consisted of two poached eggs, two pieces of bacon on two pieces of toast bread. Parsley garnish. No tomato or anything else....... $17.50. I usually have my wallet in my back pocket and it hurts when I sit on it after a long drive.... Not after visiting here.

“Good On Ya Maree and Jim!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

Our car broke down over the hill past the Tarawera Cafe last October 2012 on the Taupo side when the motor overheated and died. We hitched a ride back to the cafe only to find a sign saying it was closed for the day. However Maree had spotted us being dropped off and walking across the carpark with suitcase in tow so came to the door in response to our knocking. We were taken in with unreserved hospitality and consideration, given a cuppa and sandwiches while we arranged for a tow truck to come and get us from Napier. As this was the Thursday evening of Labour Weekend, which is also Hawkes Bay Anniversary weekend, we had a few hours wait until the tow vehicle arrived and were invited to stay in the warmth of the cafe until the truck arrived. We offered to wait outside so they could continue with their evening's plans but they would not hear of it, delaying their plans until we were safely collected.

We can not thank Maree and Jim enough for their kindness and concern. This time shared, exchanging stories of life's adventures was calming, and one which will not be forgotten.
We have since stopped for a cuppa on our way past and were delighted they remembered us.
We will be making it a regular stopover, to spend more time with such neat people, genuine good Kiwis, and to visit the hot pools.

“take your gold card”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

I know you're rural but you prices are pure exploitation. not very friendly or welcoming. I'll definitely won't be stopping again. a coffee and sandwich does not give yor much change from $20.
