“comfortable room with a good view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2010

I hadn’t read the reviews of this motel on Trip Advisor before going to New Zealand. Had I done so the two recent negative reviews may have turned me off. However, I’m glad I hadn’t read them, as this wasn’t my experience at all. We drove along Marine Parade assessing options and enquired at a few. This one offered the best rates for appearance (ones slightly cheaper looked much cheaper and less attractive), and was considerably less than the one next door, which is built in virtually the same style (and not 'cheap and nasty' - whatever that means - as one reviewer describes it). We had a spacious studio room with a king bed and enormous spa bath in the room, which overlooked the sea and had a nice balcony outside on which to sit and view the ocean. The room was clean and comfortable and, unlike a couple of previous reviewers, we were very pleased we had chosen this motel. We would certainly stay there again.

This building, though modern, is cheap and nasty. We turned up to be shown our room which reeked of cigarette smoke the minute we walked in. As soon as we started to complain the Manager offered us another room and it was clear he had expected us to complain but was trying us out to see if we would accept the stinky room first before offering us something else. We were lucky we actually arrived before the office closed otherwise we would have been stuck with that room - we had arranged for a late check in with the key left out for us. The room we were given didn't get made up the next day because housekeeping staff hadn't been told we'd been moved and when I told the Manager we hadn't had our room made up he was immediately defensive about it until he realised what had happened. The bed was as hard as concrete, the most uncomfortable mattress imaginable. All night we could hear water dripping - it seemed to be in the wall cavities, not taps. The heater didn't work. Room facilities are really basic. If you get an "ocean view" room you need to know that you have to climb two flights of external stairs - not a big deal except when you have suitcases and it is raining. There are no lifts or internal staircases. In the rain the matting on the stair treads gets sodden and water puddles on the stair landings. The best description for this place is cheap and nasty.

Long narrow unit down one side of the complex. One bedroom with the two single beds had no exterior window instead had a window looking out into a long narrow hall. Bedroom fitted in two single beds, no cupboards, stuffy. Large king bed in the other room obviously older hard and lumpy. Bathroom had a shower curtain for shower over the bath. No plunger for coffee. Would have had a sea view except a tree planted infront of it.

We arrived in Napier at about 6 in the evening & looked in 4 motels along the Marine parade. Could not tell too much difference between any of them - exect that Beach front offered a better deal.

Roomm offered super luxury - massive bed, massive spa pool in the bedroom with a separate bathroom / shower, kitchen & spacious lounge. Air conditioning was available but not required.

Room was very comfortable and quiet - Staff provided recomendations on eating, winaries & routes out.

Stayed in an upstairs executive suite with in-room spa pool, kitchenette and city facing balcony. Very clean and spacious. Colouring of decor a little dated. But very comfortable and close to shops and restaurants.

We stayed in one of the most expensive rooms. Unfortunately, it was not up to the standard expected for the money spent. One bedroom was poky, dingey and small, without a window. Upon discussion with manager about this, found him to be alarmingly defensive and positively aggressive. Hence, this property has serious management problems - which left us with a bad taste in our mouthes of Napier generally, which is sad, and no doubt unfair, to all the comfortable and well run hotels in the area.

We enjoyed our two day stay here as the room was one of the best we have stayed in - spacious, comfortable and well equipped.

This motel is well positioned on Marine Parade away from the noisy places, walkable from the centre and across the road from the sea, not too far from the Information Centre. Traffic noise not a problem for us - seems quiet at night anyway. We had a ground floor room facing the sea, cheaper than the first floor. a really nice room, very spacious, beautifully furnished with all we needed - kitchenette, jacuzzi in the room with separate shower room and towels in each plus bath robes in the wardrobe. There was a small sofa plus chairs and a table. Small area outside at the front if we wanted to sit out. Good range of TV channels. Helpful staff. Small grocery store round the corner. laundry on site and an airer in our cupboard as well as iron and board. Very good place.

Wi-fi is 5 NZ dollars for 24 hours but instead we used Esquires in the centre which is free for the price of a cup of coffee for an hour.
