Don't stay here. If you can afford to pay at least a bit more per night elsewhere, where you're going to get a decent level of service and a quality stay, and actually SLEEP, then I highly recommend you do so. While I admit it is not the hostel managements fault that a very loud pub is right across the street from many rooms with noisy patrons and loud music and speakerphones going until about 3am, then loud roadworks machines and street works starting up at about 6am, I felt completely cheated and disgusted that, after reading all the false reviews saying this place is lovely and they had a great night's sleep and were very comfortable, they took all my money off my credit card at the time of booking, then were completely unhelpful and actually WALKED AWAY when I asked if there was another single room on the other side of the hostel that was available and quieter. The hostel was at least half empty! The person I asked, twice because they just walked away from me the first time, was a young male backpacker working there with a bit of an 'I don't care too much' attitude. However, another older male traveller also working there was lovely to deal with when I asked for more bedding after my first night. The single bed was below average and rather uncomfortable. I'm not a tall person, but seriously only a dwarf could have room to move in there. The reading light is positioned so you whack the back of your head on it when you sit back.
Also bad luck for me and my timing were a few of the other travellers - young guys who snort, hock, spit, yell, swear and then stare and wolf whistle at any female who walks past. Really, really unpleasant! I was so angry about the situation and their bad response to my request that I find it hard to have anything positive to say. While it's certainly cheap, you get breakfast thrown in for free, can save further money by using the large kitchen to cook your meals, and the place is cleaned up every day, my stay at the Criterion has really brought home that expression "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR". And I sincerely don't mean that in a good way.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, request a quiet room

I was booked into a 4 bed share for 2 nights but had the room to myself the whole time. There was a window/fan/sink/mirror in the room, room was a bit small but the communal areas were huge. It wasn't a good place to meet other travellers as it was fairly empty and the people who were there seemed to know each other and most of them worked there cleaning the place as well.
There was a free breakfast incl toast, tea/coffee, cereal and tinned fruit. There is sky TV and internet (quite expensive though).
I'd stay there again purely because its spacious, clean, quiet and in the centre of town. I have no complaints about it, its not an exciting place to stay but it was a good base to explore the area.

we had two terrible nights sleep here because of the hostel-owned bar directly underneath pumping out rubbish and very loud music until 3am. It's a shame because it's a very well located hostel in an old art deco building which has some charm. The bed in our first room also had a terribly saggy mattress, the second was a little better. On the plus side - good free breakfast and really clean. But seriously the noise is ridiculous so unless you're a heavy sleeper or night owl, steer clear.

We were delighted to find Criterion Art Deco Backpackers a quiet, chill-out place to stay. Our first night was a Sunday, which may explain the lack of night activities around the area... hence a good night's sleep! Our doubles room ($50/night) was located near to the toilets/showers (but we were not disturbed by any noise as there weren't many guests at that time) and had a view of the street below; the room was furnished with a small sink and a heater operated by the management (only turned on in the evenings).
The chill-out / reading lounge area was massive, with three internet computers (about $4-5 and hour), pool table and fireplaces. The open kitchen was quite impressive in size & cleanliness compared to other places we've went to, and you can have your meals at the (also) very spacious Dining / TV room.
Start your day with their FREE continental breakfast (milk, toast, cereal, fruit, plenty of jam) and before you head out, check out their 'weather board' (updated daily). In case you're not sure what to do, there's also a brochure / information rack with plenty of activity suggestions around town. Before you leave, don't forget to pin the country you're from on their World Map!
Our only gripe is there is no on-street parking, but the staff did allocate us a free parking spot about 3-min walk away from the hostel and not within sight. If you don't feel safe with that option, you could do what we did: Park our car below Criterion after 6pm (council parking rates apply between 8am-6pm) and re-park our car the next morning to the allocated parking lot at 8am.
One last note: If you have your own wi-fi enabled laptop, you could purchase a coffee at next-door Esquires Coffee, grab a free wi-fi voucher from them and get connected either in their cafe, or at Criterion itself; depending on the proximity of your room to the cafe, the signal maybe strong enough for you to go online in your room!

Lovely laid back. back packers hostel with great cafe below.
A balcony overlooking the square and sea to sit and have breakfast ,coffee or a drink in the evening.I so loved this place. Fabulous art deco architecture and full of atmosphere. Very relaxed, but also comfortable.Large sofas to read a book or talk to friends. Massive kitchen with free breakfast and a selection of herbs to use. Such a lovely place. I stayed in eleven hostels in New Zealand and this was my favourite !

Nice old art deco building. Clean enough and good value. Rooms are a bit basic. Staff were a bit moody but I expect they have a high staff turnover. It's a good, central location for walking around Napier. It does have a basic free breakfast. And a cat.

Our twin room here was spacious and the electric fan was definitely a bonus. The mattresses could've done with replacing though.

The kitchen was clean and plenty big enough to cook comfortably. There were lots of tables to sit at in the dining room/lounge.

The TV area was comfortable and there was more lounge space in the next room for people who didn't want to watch TV.

Bathrooms were clean but there weren't enough showers and the water fluctuated between a freezing trickle and a scalding trickle.

The free breakfast is simple: cereal, toast, tea, coffee, but is a very nice touch.

Good location right in the centre of town. There's a bar below but we couldn't hear it from our room.

Receptionist was not rude, but seemed very vague, as if in another world and unaware of the potential need to answer people's queries.
