“Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, great services!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

This beautiful old weatherboard building with views on the sea that survived the 1930 Napier earthquake has been turned into a lovely Hostel! The family and staff were lovely and very helpful. Our room was a corner room that got lots of sun. The bathrooms are each separate (not ensuite but each with a toilet and shower), which gave better privacy than other hostels I have stayed in. The TV room and dining area are cosy and comfortable. The outside courtyard area is great too and the cat, Masha, is very friendly. The facilities are perfect and the location couldn't be better. It was very quiet while we were there but it was winter. We had a great time!

This was such a sweet place to stay and Bob was lovely.

Our room was a corner front and we looked out to sea through the massive windows. The bed was very comfy and just round the corner in the hostel was the snug, with sofas, books and TV. The kitchen was very clean and well equipped with an outdoor terrace.

We spent 3 nights in Napier, and loved the art deco feel, the ocean front and the seals that honked in the morning!!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room.

We had a double room with ocean view. Great, we though, but the noise of the road didn't really cease at night. If you don't mind to sleep with earplugs (I often wear them, my boyfriend is not easily disturbed, but even he begged for my spare ones), it is no problem. The staff was nice, and helpful. They did s great job for cleaning too, but unfortunately there are guests who do not know that they should take care of the communal facilities. One day, a guy shaved and the whole day the lavatory was full of the remains of his beard, the same for people flooding the bathroom while taking a shower, etc. It might be nice if someone could check from time to time. In the kitchen there I'd a huge choice of cooking utilities, and good water. The pans and dishes might be cleaner. We weren't successful to clean our used dishes better, as there is a strange Dishwashing liquid, which apparently doesn't clean at all, although we followed the instructions. The living room in the first floor is great though, and the internet facilities too, as usual in YHA. What seems quite odd is that YHA in general seems to be pretty concerned about the environment (which we find great!!), and they do quite a lot, e.g. recycling is really easy to do there. But the buildings are so badly isolated, that we had the electric heater on all day. State of the art renovation might save lot of money on a longer term, and be good for the environment.

Right on Marine Parade, the hostel was very clean and comfy. Plenty of bathrooms and showers. The kitchen is not too big, but not many people were using it when we were there, so it was ok. The staff (Bob) were really friendly and knowledgeable. We slept in a double room facing the ocean, which I imagine might be noisy in the summer. Would definitely stay here again.
