My wife and I had been touring the North Island and we were on our way back to Auckland. We hadn't booked anything in Hamilton and just happened to be cruising along Willoughby Street when we spotted the neon "Vacancy" sign. The ex-dairy farming couple who currently manage this new motel were most pleasant and welcoming. We were shown two rooms but picked the one with the queen sized bed. The other one - with the king sized bed had been cleverly designed for disabled guests.
Wow! Our unit was so new you could smell the newness. Fixtures and fittings were of a high standard and the kitchen area was well-equipped. The bathroom was spacious with a spa bath and a large walk-in shower cubicle. There was a little seated area through the French doors. We enjoyed free wi-fi and a received a complimentary copy of the "New Zealand Herald" in the morning. It was possible to order cooked breakfasts but we just made our own as we had done on all of our other lovely mornings in summertime New Zealand.
We'd like to have spent longer in and around Hamilton. It seemed like a nice city with riverside walks and a lovely garden suburb around Lake Rotoroa. Willoughby Street is much quieter than the nearby and parallel Ulster Street where I guess you'd be very conscious of passing traffic.
We had dinner in the nearby Speight's Ale House - a ten minute walk - with a reasonably priced and inviting menu. Later at Biddy Mulligans Irish Bar we saw the most depressing female singer we have ever encountered - happily murdering upbeat songs. Ah well, you can't win 'em all.
