“Not sure if it was a true upgrade?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

Have stayed here before for work but not as a holiday maker. This is quite an upmarket hotel for its location in Gisborne. Check in was prompt and we were advised that we had been upgraded to a premium room. Although the room was on the third floor the view was out over at the logging wharf not what we would call a premium view! Maybe 2-3 rooms along would have had a great view towards Young Nicks Head. The rooms and balconies on the west side were cloaked in afternoon sun whereas our east facing room mid afternoon was chilly and quite dark without the lights on. Even in the morning the sun could not seem to reach in under the balcony roof. The room had a full kitchen which reduced the bedroom space and there would have been an opportunity to have some comfortable chairs instead of so much kitchen. The mix of slate floor in the kitchen area with carpet is a trap for stubbed toes at night when visiting the bathroom in the dark! The TV was tiny and located in a small cabinet. We could not get sky sports on the TV which was disappointing when there was a rugby game we had hoped to see. However, the internet access was the easiest to use of our entire holiday. Overall quite good value for money and a handy location to the main street.

Room Tip: West facing rooms with balconies are bathed in Gisborne afternoon sun.

We booked a long weekend stay at Portside Hotel for a discovery weekend in Gisborne. Great location - handy to walk to and from the City Centre, and nearby dockland where there were a selection of restaurants and plenty to watch the world go by!

Our room was super comfortable - large, clean, tidy and the Queensized bed was oh so comfortable.

Would definitely recommend Portside when visiting Gisborne.

Reception staff were warm and welcoming and attended to any request we had - from sights to see to where to eat and drink.

Room Tip: If a ship is in Port then I would request a City side room, but you may not know shipping movements...

Best part of our stay here was the balcony & view from our room. Service was poor, tv reception was poor, room was very small & overpriced, cleaner walked into room without even knocking 1st & before we checked out & there was NO compendium folder in room which should be a must for all visitors new to the area, however was handy location to restaurants etc within walking distance.

We had seen this place when it was newly built and we always intended to stay there one day so we spent five nights in a 3rd floor apartment with a harbour view. Loved the kitchen and bathroom, thought the lounge and bedroom furniture starting to look a little tired but it was comfortable and relaxing and, despite the logging operations across the way, very peaceful.
However the TV was rubbish, no Sky despite the Sky magazine being displayed on the table and reception advising me it would be sorted - never was. But the really annoying part of our stay was that four times staff walked in on us, three times when we had the "privacy please" sign on our door handle. The excuse " oh we thought you had checked out or we did not know anyone was in this room". Reception assured me that our bookings clearly stated the day we were to leave. Come on Portside that is not good enough!
However we did enjoy eating our breakfast on the little deck and the location was perfect, we walked to most local restaurants, shops etc.

Room Tip: Ensure you book a room overlooking the harbour but be aware that extensive logging operations contin...

I wouldn't normally stay at an Apartment Hotel, but had little choice as the town was full and I had not reserved accommodation until the day before I arrived.
Nevertheless, the staff welcomed me and told me that I had got the second last room. The apartment had a large lounge/kitchen with a separate good-sized bedroom fitted with a King sized bed, which was very comfortable. The bathroom was well appointed with a large spa bath with shower over. This was a bit awkward for us oldies, but very clean and tidy.
The lifts were very slow and my pot side view was actually the roof of the nearby Red Shed Warehouse. Guess I was on the wrong side for the portside view. The location was handy to the City's main street and a short walk took me there and another short walk took me to the local Fishing Club bar and restaurant. All in all a good place to stay if you are into apartment/ motel type accommodation.

Room Tip: I have not marked room service or restaurant because none exist.

We stayed here for four nights in December in a harbour view suite (one bedroom) on the top floor.Check in was quick and easy which was welcome following a long flight from the UK. We have stayed here several times over a number of years and the high standards have been maintained. The suite was excellent, clean and a good size. The kitchen area had good facilities including a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.
In the living area there was an old style TV and the furniture could have done with an update but otherwise was fine. There is air conditioning in both in the living area and the bedroom and balconies in both rooms over looking the river and towards the Port.
The accommodation was good value for about £100 a night.
The hotel is located literally two minutes from the beach and is very close to the town centre and in walking distance of some excellent places to eat.

I really did love this hotel. We had a 3rd floor one bedroom facing the harbour. Very clean and quiet. The view was amazing. Our 'older check in Lady' unsure of her name needs to attend a customer service course, she was unhelpful, and rather rude.
