Not sure about some of the reviews here. Stayed at Hicks Bay Motel last Saturday night and it was excellent. Was starting to worry we would miss the RWC ABs against France but they had it (only place with Sky TV). Watched in their bar/lounge and the atmosphere was fantastic. Dinner was great with fast and friendly service. Good Internet service available.
Room (#15) appeared to be recently redecorated, beds were firm and comfortable, everything (linen, towels, bathroom, etc.) clean and the view sweet as. John, the owner, was very helpful and a fair dinkum kiwi. If he offers to take you for a run (which he did when my son and I asked him for suggestions) suggest you read this before deciding:
IMHO, this is the best place to stay between Ohope and Gisborne. That said, didn't experience any of the home or farm stays although we did try. They either didn't return my call or were full. And if you're into fishing, stay a couple of nights at Hicks Bay because the fishing is as good as it gets anywhere in the world.
And, again, I'm perplexed by the negative comments about this place. Because of them we were fearful of booking ahead so instead checked out Lottin bay, Hicks Bay and Te Araroa when we got there. Hicks Bay Motel was a no-brainer. But it would have been a disaster if they had no vacancy when we arrived. You're in the middle of nowhere with no alternatives.
