The French Cafe had been on my to-do list for years, but when planning special nights out, its secluded spot has always slipped my mind. However my partner booked us in for my birthday in December - and we weren't disappointed. This some of the finest dining in Auckland - and if you can get a table looking out into the patio/garden area then it is a great spot to wine and dine the evening away.
The food was spot-on - having eaten in similar priced restaurants in Auckland, we ordered sides (assuming the mains would be very small) however this wasn't necessary - and subsequently we couldn't fit in dessert! Each dish was perfectly balanced in both taste and presentation - and coupled with the complimentary bread and handmade butter, plus both the starter and dessert amuse-bouche it really was a well rounded dining experience.
The only slightly negative feedback I have - more of a preference really - is that the staff are so attentive you almost don't want to make eye contact because they will rush over to talk to you and check you have everything you need... great if you actually want something, not so great if you are prone to people watching! Also we were a table of two, which meant we were squeezed onto a small table.... I noticed there were other tables of two on much larger tables (double the size of ours) which looked more comfortable in terms of space - this could have been because we were dining the week before Christmas and they were literally squeezing us in.
