Description: Sails Restaurant has an amazing location. Set in the middle of Westhaven Marina, beside the Harbour Bridge, with breathtaking views of the harbour. There are few views in the world that capture the essence of the city than the one from Sails Restaurant. A couple of minutes from the centre of Auckland, yet in a world of its own, with unlimited free parking at the door, Sails Restaurant is not just about its location. Over the last three decades the restaurant has forged its reputation as one of New Zealand’s top restaurants through an uncompromising belief in using only the freshest ingredients, the most talented chefs, and professional waiting staff. The menu at Sails is seafood focused, but also includes New Zealand’s finest beef and lamb. The full menu and all the details can be found on our website.

“Trying to be Michelin starred but fails I'm afraid”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2010

Very nice restaurant but given the prices you just expect more from the food.

They are obviously trying to present a very high class image. The service is attentive and sometimes overbearing, until of course when you want another drink and you can't see a waiter for love nor money.

The food was good but for the prices, you just expect more.

Yes I would go back as long as I had some kind of discount voucher -:))

They seemed to have a number of larger groups that got the attention. Perhaps some reeducation for the waiting staff.

Perhaps this review seems a bit picky? I'm sure you will have a good meal as we did but it's just the other stuff that gets in the way.

“Obviously it was just not our night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2010

Our first night in New Zealand, we were recommended to Sails as a fine dining experience which would set the tone for our holiday. It was not to be. It was, in fact, a comedy of errors. The dining area is large with steps up at one side to an open bar area. Our window table was up these stairs and technically in the bar. This might have been all right had there not been some twenty-five 50th wedding anniversary guests having pre-dinner drinks. They were understandably vocal and enthusiastic. We asked for a change of table and were given a firm 'No' with an assurance that they would eventually take their table and all would be well.
The sommelier appeared. He was a fellow clearly proud of both his social skills and his knowledge of wine. He would assist in the selection and pour and monitor our choice, a procedure with which we are both familiar and comfortable. The waiter appeared and starting pushing us along. In our best interests we assume he was trying to get our order in before the table of twenty-five orders hit the kitchen. We don't like being pushed and certainly not at these prices. We could see the sommelier in the distance being sociable. By the time he came to pour us a second glass of wine we were finishing up our main course. He and the pushing waiter were completely out of sync so understandably we had taken to pouring our own wine. The sommelier's body language gave off waves of displeasure at this impertinence so he moved our wine bottle twenty feet out of our reach. We simply went and got it back.
With all this discord I can't even tell you what we ate. Fine dining is ninety percent the quality of the food. The rest is attention to detail, care, focus, ambiance, pace and balance. Sails was woefully adrift on the latter skills.

“A bit pretentious”

An excellent setting with a huge picture window beside the harbour bridge. Pricey food which was OK. A very knowledgeable sommelier.

“Not worthy of the spot”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2008

Sails is situated right on the harbour with a great 180 degree view including the harbour bridge on the left. It is captivating and many patrons are looking forward to having a good time there. However, the food we had was at best average - a crayfish soup which was watery with a couple of prawns standing in as substitute. The fish dishes, which should have been excellent, were available at a similar quality in other restaurants at a much lower price. There were waitors and dishes were served. However, we got the feeling that we were there as nuisances, although we did not ask for anything extraordinary except ordering our meals. At the end of the dinner, a lukewarm coffee sealed the fate of this restaurant in our opinion.
